68. Obligation of Friday Salah (prayer)

1ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ وَمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ إِنَّ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَرَضَ فِي كُلِّ سَبْعَةِ أَيَّامٍ خَمْساً وَثَلاَثِينَ صَلاَةً مِنْهَا صَلاَةٌ وَاجِبَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يَشْهَدَهَا إِلاَّ خَمْسَةً الْمَرِيضَ وَالْمَمْلُوكَ وَالْمُسَافِرَ وَالْمَرْأَةَ وَالصَّبِيَّ.


1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from ‘Asem ibn Humayd from abu Basir and Muhammad ibn Muslim who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘In every seven days Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has made thirty-five Salah (prayer) obligatory upon every Muslim to attend except five kinds of people: Those suffering from illness, slaves, travelers, women and children.’”

2ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ جَمِيلِ بْنِ دَرَّاجٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ وَزُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ تَجِبُ الْجُمُعَةُ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ مِنْهَا عَلَى فَرْسَخَيْنِ.


2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Um ay r from Jamil ibn Darraj from Muhammad ibn Muslim and Zurarah who have said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Friday Salah (prayer) is not obligatory upon those who are two farsakh (about six miles) away (from the location of the congregation).”’

3ـ عَلِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) عَنِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ تَجِبُ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ مِنْهَا عَلَى رَأْسِ فَرْسَخَيْنِ فَإِذَا زَادَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ شَيْ‏ءٌ.


3. Ali has narrated from his father from Hammad from Hariz from ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about Friday. He (the Imam) said, ‘It (Friday Salah (prayer)) is obligatory up on those who live within two farsakh. If the distance is more than this then it is not obligatory on him.’”

4ـ عَلِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ كَانَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) يَقُولُ لاَ تَكُونُ الْخُطْبَةُ وَالْجُمُعَةُ وَصَلاَةُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ عَلَى أَقَلَّ مِنْ خَمْسَةِ رَهْطٍ الإِمَامِ وَأَرْبَعَةٍ.


4. Ali has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ibn ’Udhaynah from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The sermons and Friday Salah (prayer) are not valid without the presence of five people, the fifth of whom is the Imam.’”

5ـ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَبَّاسِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ أَدْنَى مَا يُجْزِئُ فِي الْجُمُعَةِ سَبْعَةٌ أَوْ خَمْسَةٌ أَدْنَاهُ.


5. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amir from Ali ibn Mahziyar from Fadalah from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from abu al-‘Abbas who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Minimum number of attending people for Friday Salah (prayer) is seven or at least five people.’”

6ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ جَمِيعاً عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ فَرَضَ الله عَلَى النَّاسِ مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ خَمْساً وَثَلاَثِينَ صَلاَةً مِنْهَا صَلاَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَرَضَهَا الله فِي جَمَاعَةٍ وَهِيَ الْجُمُعَةُ وَوَضَعَهَا عَنْ تِسْعَةٍ عَنِ الصَّغِيرِ وَالْكَبِيرِ وَالْمَجْنُونِ وَالْمُسَافِرِ وَالْعَبْدِ وَالْمَرْأَةِ وَالْمَرِيضِ وَالأعْمَى وَمَنْ كَانَ عَلَى رَأْسِ فَرْسَخَيْنِ.


6. Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan and Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from all from Flammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘From one Friday to the next Friday Allah has made thirty- five Salah (prayer) obligatory. Of these one is made obligatory to be performed in congregation and that is Friday Salah (prayer). He has exempted nine kinds of people: Of such people are children, the elderly, the insane, the travelers, the slaves, the women, people suffering from illness, the blind and those who live beyond two farsakh.’”

7ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ جَمِيلٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ يَكُونُ بَيْنَ الْجَمَاعَتَيْنِ ثَلاَثَةُ أَمْيَالٍ يَعْنِي لاَ يَكُونُ جُمُعَةٌ إِلاَّ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ ثَلاَثَةِ أَمْيَالٍ وَلَيْسَ تَكُونُ جُمُعَةٌ إِلاَّ بِخُطْبَةٍ قَالَ فَإِذَا كَانَ بَيْنَ الْجَمَاعَتَيْنِ فِي الْجُمُعَةِ ثَلاَثَةُ أَمْيَالٍ فَلاَ بَأْسَ بِأَنْ يُجَمِّعَ هَؤُلاَءِ وَيُجَمِّعَ هَؤُلاَءِ.


7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from Jamil from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘There must be a distance of three miles between two congregations for Friday Salah (prayer). Friday Salah (prayer) without sermon is not valid. If there is a distance of three miles between two congregation for Friday Salah (prayer), then each congregation can come together (for Friday Salah (prayer)).”’
