Al-Amālī

1 - حدثنا الشيخ الجليل أبو جعفر محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن موسى ابن بابويه القمي، قال: حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي ابن الحسين السعد آبادي، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أبيه، عن يونس بن عبد الرحمن، عن المغيرة بن توبة، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن جده (عليهم السلام)، قال: لما أشرف أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام) على المقابر، قال: يا أهل التربة، ويا أهل القربة، أما الدور فقد سكنت، وأما الازواج فقد نكحت، وأما الاموال فقد قسمت، فهذا خبر ما عندنا، فما خبر ما عندكم؟ ثم التفت إلى أصحابه فقال: لو أذن لهم في الكلام لاخبروكم أن خير الزاد التقوى (1).

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi from his father from Yunus b. `Abd al-Rahman from al-Mughira b. Tuba from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his grandfather (as). He said: When Amir al-Mu’minin (as) inspected the graveyards, he said: O people of the dust! O people of estrangement! As for your houses, they have been reinhabited. As for your wives, they have been remarried. As for your wealth, it has been distributed. This is the news from our side, what about the news from your side? Then, he turned to his companions and said: If they were permitted to speak, they would have informed you that the best provision is God-wariness.

2 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن الحسين بن يزيد، عن إسماعيل بن مسلم السكوني، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال علي (عليه السلام): ما من يوم يمر على ابن آدم إلا قال له ذلك اليوم: يا بن آدم، أنا يوم جديد، وأنا عليك شهيد، فقل في خيرا، واعمل في خيرا، أشهد لك به يوم القيامة، فإنك لن تراني بعده أبدا (1).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father from al-Husayn b. Yazid from Isma`il b. Muslim al-Sukuni from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers (as). He said: `Ali (as) said: There is not a day that comes by a son of Adam except that the day says to him: “O son of Adam! I am a new day, and I am a witness over you. So, say what is good and do what is good, and I will testify for you on the Day of Resurrection; for you will never see me again after it.”

3 - حدثنا محمد بن علي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثني عمي محمد بن أبي القاسم، قال: حدثنا هارون بن مسلم، عن مسعدة بن زياد، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام) قال: قال علي (عليه السلام): إن للمرء المسلم ثلاثة أخلاء: فخليل يقول له: أنا معك حيا وميتا، وهو عمله، وخليل يقول له: أنا معك حتى تموت، وهو ماله، فإذا مات صار للورثة، وخليل يقول له: أنا معك إلى باب قبرك ثم أخليك، وهو ولده (2).

Muhammad b. `Ali (rh) narrated to us. He said: My uncle Muhammad b. Abi’l Qasim narrated to me. He said: Harun b. Muslim narrated to us from Mas`ada b. Ziyad from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad form his father from his forefathers (as). He said: `Ali (as) said: Surely, a Muslim person has three friends: (1) A friend that says to him: “I am with you, alive and dead” – that is his deeds. (2) A friend that says to him: “I am with you until you die” – that is his wealth, for when he dies, it is given in inheritance. (3) A friend that says to him: “I am with you until the gateway of your grave, then I will leave you” – that is his child.

4 - حدثنا جعفر بن علي الكوفي، قال: حدثنا الحسن بن علي بن عبد الله ابن المغيرة، عن جده عبد الله بن المغيرة، عن إسماعيل بن مسلم السكوني، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال علي (عليه السلام): ما أنزل الموت حق منزلته من عد غدا من أجله (3).

Ja`far b. `Ali al-Kufi narrated to us. He said: al-Hasan b. `Ali b. `Abdullah b. al-Mughira narrated to us from his grandfather `Abdullah b. al-Mughira from Isma`il b. Muslim al-Sakuni from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers (as). He said: `Ali (as) said: Death is not given its proper due if one considers tomorrow to be his.

5 - حدثنا محمد بن علي، عن عمه محمد بن أبي القاسم، عن هارون بن مسلم، عن مسعدة بن صدقة، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام): أن أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام) خطب بالبصرة، فقال بعد ما حمد الله عزوجل وأثنى عليه، وصلى على النبي وآله: المدة وإن طالت قصيرة، والماضي للمقيم عبرة، والميت للحي عظة، وليس لامس إن مضى عودة، ولا المرء من غد على ثقه، الاول للاوسط رائد، والاوسط للآخر قائد، وكل لكل مفارق، وكل بكل لاحق، والموت لكل غالب، واليوم الهائل لكل آزف، وهو اليوم الذي لا ينفع فيه مال ولا بنون إلا من أتى الله بقلب سليم. ثم قال (عليه السلام): معاشر شيعتي، اصبروا على عمل لا غنى بكم عن ثوابه، واصبروا عن عمل لا صبر لكم على عقابه، إنا وجدنا الصبر على طاعة الله أهون من الصبر على عذاب الله عزوجل، اعلموا أنكم في أجل محدود وأمل ممدود ونفس معدود، ولا بد للاجل أن يتناهى، وللامل أن يطوى، وللنفس أن يحصى، ثم دمعت عيناه وقرأ: (وإن عليكم لحافظين * كراما كاتبين * يعلمون ما تفعلون) (1).

Muhammad b. `Ali narrated to us from his uncle Muhammad b. al-Qasim from Harun b. Muslim from Mas`ada b. Sadaqa from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers (as). Amir al-Mu’minin (as) delivered a sermon in Basra. After praising and commending Allah and blessing the Prophet and his Family, he said: A duration – even if it is prolonged – is short. The past is a lesson for those present. The dead are an exhortation for the living. When yesterday passes, it does not return, and a person from tomorrow is not upon stability – the first is a guide for the middle, and the middle is the leader of the last. Everyone will part from everyone, and everyone will follow everyone. Death will overcome everyone, and the colossal day is coming to everyone. It is the day in which neither wealth nor sons will benefit anyone – only those who meet Allah with a peaceable heart [will be delivered]. Then, he (as) said: O my Shi`a! Be patient upon the deeds whose rewards you will not become needless of, and patiently refrain from the deeds whose punishment you will have no patience for. Surely, we have found that being patient upon the obedience of Allah is easier than being patient upon the punishment of Allah. Know that your time is finite, your hope is amplified, and your breaths are numbered. Your time cannot but end, your hope cannot but be extinguished, and your breaths cannot but be exhausted. Then, his eyes filled up with tears, and he recited: “While you are certainly observed by vigilant, honourable angels recording everything – they know whatever you do.” (82:10-12)

6 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن الصفار، عن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن إسماعيل بن مرار، عن يونس بن عبد الرحمن، عن أبي أيوب، عن أبي حمزة، عن أبي جعفر محمد بن علي الباقر (عليه السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): جمع الخير كله في ثلاث خصال: النظر، والسكوت، والكلام، فكل نظر ليس فيه اعتبار فهو سهو، وكل سكوت ليس فيه فكرة فهو غفلة، وكل كلام ليس فيه ذكر فهو لغو، فطوبى لمن كان نظره عبرة، وسكوته فكرة، وكلامه ذكرا، وبكى على خطيئته، وأمن الناس شره (2).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us from Ibrahim b. Hashim from Isma`il b. Marar from Yunus b. `Abd al-Rahman from Abi Ayyub from Abi Hamza from Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqir (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: All goodness is in three actions: sight, silence, and speech. Every sight that is devoid of consideration is negligence. Every silence that is devoid of thought is heedlessness. Every speech that is devoid of the remembrance [of Allah] is prattle. Blessed is he in whose sight is consideration, and in whose silence is thought, and in whose words is remembrance – who cries over his mistakes and from whose evil the people are safe.

7 - حدثنا الحسين بن أحمد (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا أبي، قال: حدثنا إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن الحسين بن يزيد النوفلي، عن إسماعيل بن أبي زياد السكوني، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن آبائه، عن علي (عليهم السلام)، قال: اغتمنوا الدعاء عند خمسة مواطن: عند قراءة القرآن، وعند الاذان، وعند نزول الغيث، وعند التقاء الصفين للشهادة، وعند دعوة المظلوم، فإنها ليس لها حجاب دون العرش (3).

Al-Husayn b. Ahmad (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us. He said: Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from al-Husayn b. Yazid al-Nawfali from Isma`il b. Abi Ziyad al-Sukuni from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers from `Ali (as). He said: Take to supplication in five places: (1) When reciting the Quran, (2) When the adhan [is called], (3) When rain falls, (4) When two rows meet for martyrdom, and (5) at the call of the oppressed, for it does not have a barrier under the Throne.

8 - حدثنا محمد بن (4) القاسم الاسترابادي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن الحسن الحسيني، عن الحسن بن علي، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن علي، عن أبيه الرضا، عن أبيه موسى بن جعفر، عن أبيه جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه محمد بن علي، عن أبيه علي بن الحسين، عن أبيه الحسين بن علي (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): كم من غافل ينسج ثوبا ليلبسه، وإنما هو كفنه، ويبني بيتا (1) ليسكنه، وإنما هو موضع قبره (2).

Muhammad b. al-Qasim al-Astarabadi (ra) narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Husayni narrated to us from al-Hasan b. `Ali from his father from Muhammad b. `Ali from his father al-Rida from his father Musa b. Ja`far from his father Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father Muhammad b. `Ali from his father `Ali b. al-Husayn from his father al-Husayn b. `Ali (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: How many heedless people weave a robe to wear, when it is actually his shroud; and build a house to live in, when it is actually the place of his grave.

9 - وقيل لامير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): ما الاستعداد للموت؟ قال: أداء الفرائض، واجتناب المحارم، والاشتمال على المكارم، ثم لا يبالي أوقع على الموت أم وقع الموت عليه، والله ما يبالي ابن أبي طالب أوقع على الموت، أم وقع الموت عليه (3).

It was said to Amir al-Mu’minin (as): What does one do to prepare for death? He said: Performing the obligations, avoiding the forbidden, and being generous – then, it will not matter if he approaches death or if death approaches him. By Allah, it does not matter to Ibn Abi Talib whether he approaches death or if death approaches him.

10 - وقال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام) في بعض خطبه: أيها الناس، إن الدنيا دار فناء، والآخرة دار بقاء، فخذوا من ممركم لمقركم، ولا تهتكوا أستاركم عند من لا تخفي عليه أسراركم، وأخرجوا من الدنيا قلوبكم من قبل أن تخرج منها أبدانكم، ففي الدنيا حييتم (4)، وللآخرة خلقتم، إنما الدنيا كالسم يأكله من لا يعرفه، إن العبد إذا مات قالت الملائكة: ما قدم؟ وقال الناس: ما أخر؟ فقدموا فضلا يكن لكم، ولا تؤخروا كلا يكن عليكم، فإن المحروم من حرم خير ماله، والمغبوط من ثقل بالصدقات والخيرات موازينه، وأحسن في الجنة بها مهاده، وطيب على الصراط بها مسلكه (5).

Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said in one of his sermons: O people! Surely, this world is the Abode of Annihilation, and the Hereafter is the Abode of Permanence, so take from your sojourn what will aid you in your lodging. There is no need to disclose your hidden matters to Him from whom you cannot hide your secrets, so take your hearts out of this world before your body is taken out of it. You were enlivened for this world, but you were created for the Hereafter. Surely, this world is like poison: it is eaten by one who knows not what it is. When a servant dies, the angels say: “What has he brought?”, while the people say: “what has he left behind?” Send virtues before you so that they may be for you, and do not leave anything that may be against you. Surely, the deprived is one who is deprived of the goodness of his wealth, who will be envious of one whose scales become heavy with charity and good actions, through which his residence in Paradise is beautified and his trek on the Path is sweetened.

11 - حدثنا أحمد بن محمد (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا أبي، عن محمد بن عبد الجبار، عن أبي أحمد محمد بن زياد الازدي، عن أبان بن عثمان، عن ثابت بن دينار، عن سيد العابدين علي بن الحسين، عن سيد الشهداء الحسين بن علي، عن سيد الاوصياء أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): الائمة من بعدي اثنا عشر، أولهم أنت يا علي، وآخرهم القائم الذي يفتح الله تعالى ذكره على يديه مشارق الارض ومغاربها (1).

Ahmad b. Muhammad (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from Muhammad b. `Abd al-Jabbar from Abi Ahmad Muhammad b. Ziyad al-Azdi from Aban b. `Uthman from Thabit b. Dinar from the Master of Worshipers `Ali b. al-Husayn from the Master of Martyrs al-Husayn b. `Ali from the Master of Deputies Amir al-Mu’minin `Ali b. Abi Talib (as). He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: The Imams after me are twelve. You are the first of them, O `Ali. The last of them is the Qa’im, by whose hands Allah will conquer the East of the Earth and its West.

12 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن إدريس، قال: حدثنا يعقوب بن يزيد، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن محمد القبطي، قال: قال الصادق جعفر ابن محمد (عليه السلام): أغفل الناس قول رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) في علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) يوم مشربة (2) أم إبراهيم، كما أغفلوا قوله فيه يوم غدير خم، إن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) كان في مشربة أم إبراهيم وعنده أصحابه، إذ جاء علي (عليه السلام) فلم يفرجوا له، فلما رآهم لا يفرجون له قال: يا معشر الناس، هؤلاء (3) أهل بيتي تستخفون بهم وأنا حي بين ظهرانيكم، أما والله لئن غبت عنكم فإن الله لا يغيب عنكم، إن الروح والراحة والبشر والبشارة لمن ائتم بعلي وتولاه، وسلم له وللاوصياء من ولده، حقا علي أن أدخلهم في شفاعتي لانهم أتباعي، فمن تبعني فإنه مني، سنة جرت في من إبراهيم (عليه السلام)، لاني من إبراهيم وإبراهيم مني، وفضلي له فضل، وفضله فضلي، وأنا أفضل منه، تصديق ذلك قول ربي: (ذرية بعضها من بعض والله سميع عليم) (4). وكان رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) وثئت (5) رجله في مشربة أم إبراهيم حتى عاده الناس (6).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Idris narrated to us. He said: Ya`qub b. Yazid narrated to us from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Muhammad al-Qubti. He said: al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as) said: The people are heedless of what the Messenger of Allah (s) said regarding `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) in the chamber of Umm Ibrahim, just as they are heedless of what he said regarding him on the Day of Ghadir Khumm. The Messenger of Allah (s) was in the chamber of Umm Ibrahim, and his companions were with him, when `Ali (as) came. They did not make way for him. When he saw that they did not make way for him, he said: “O people! These are my Ahl al-Bayt. You trivialize them whilst I am alive and whilst I am among you. Surely, by Allah, when I am away from you, Allah will certainly not be absent from you. Surely, serenity, solace, happiness, and glad tidings are for those who follow `Ali, align with him, and are at peace with him and the deputies from his descendants. It will be my responsibility to bring them into my intercession, for they are my followers, and whoever follows me is surely of me. This is a tradition that has passed through Ibrahim (as), for I am from Ibrahim and Ibrahim is from me. My virtue is his virtue, and his virtue is my virtue – and I am more virtuous than him. The saying of my Lord confirms that, ‘Offspring, one of the other, and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.’ (3:34)” The Messenger of Allah (s) had injured his leg in the chamber of Umm Ibrahim when the people had come to him.
