Punishment of injustice and oppression
17 Aḥadīth

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِیِّ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ عُقْبَهَ عَنْ سَمَاعَهَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سُلَیْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ: الظُّلْمُ فِی الدُّنْیَا هُوَ الظُّلُمَاتُ فِی الْآخِرَهِ.


1. My father (r.h) said: it was narrated to me by Sa’d b. Abdillah from Ahmad b. Muhammad from al-Hassan b. Ali b. Fadhal from Ali b. ’Uqba from Sama’a b. Mihran from Abdillah b. Sulayman from Abi Ja’far (a.s) who said: “Injustice (Zulm) of this world is darkness (Zulumaat) of the hereafter.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَجَّالِ عَنْ غَالِبِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَمَّنْ ذَکَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فِی قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَ إِنَّ رَبَّکَ لَبِالْمِرْصادِ قَالَ قَنْطَرَهٌ عَلَی الصِّرَاطِ لَا یَجُوزُهَا عَبْدٌ بِمَظْلِمَهٍ.


2. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) explained the words of Allah: Surely your Lord is waiting in ambush, saying, “His ambush is a bridge over the Sirat Bridge which is inaccessible to those who do injustice.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ عِیسَی عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ سَالِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع یَقُولُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ یَقُولُ وَ عِزَّتِی وَ جَلَالِی لَأُجِیبُ دَعْوَهَ مَظْلُومٍ فِی مَظْلِمَهٍ ظُلِمَهَا وَ لَا حَدَّ عِنْدَهُ مِثْلُ تِلْکَ الْمَظْلِمَهِ.


3. It is narrated that Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) said that the Almighty Allah says: “I swear by My honor that I will not accept the prayer of an oppressed for an injustice which he has also done to others.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَی بْنِ الْمُتَوَکِّلِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَیْنِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَوْحَی إِلَی نَبِیٍّ مِنَ الْأَنْبِیَاءِ فِی مَمْلَکَهِ جَبَّارٍ مِنَ الْجَبَابِرَهِ أَنِ ائْتِ هَذَا الْجَبَّارَ فَقُلْ لَهُ إِنِّی لَمْ أَسْتَعْمِلْکَ عَلَی سَفْکِ الدِّمَاءِ وَ اتِّخَاذِ الْأَمْوَالِ وَ إِنَّمَا أَسْتَعْمِلُکَ لِتَکُفَّ عَنِّی أَصْوَاتَ الْمَظْلُومِینَ فَإِنِّی لَنْ أَدَعَ ظُلَامَتَهُمْ وَ إِنْ کَانُوا کُفَّاراً.


4. It was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakil who said it was narrated to me by Abdillah b. Ja’far from Muhammad b. al-Hussain from al-Hassan b. Mahbub from Ishaq b. Ammar from Abi Abdillah (a.s) who said: Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) relates that the ruler of the time of a prophet was unjust. The Almighty Allah revealed on His prophet, “Go and tell your ruler that he is not being made the ruler to oppress people. He is made the ruler to stop injustice to the people. Surely I am not going to forgive the injustice done to the subjects even if they are disbelievers.”

- حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَیْنِ بْنِ أَبِی الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْ سِنَانِ بْنِ أَبِی خَالِدٍ الْقَمَّاطِ الْوَاسِطِیِّ عَنْ زَیْدِ بْنِ عَلِیِّ بْنِ الْحُسَیْنِ عَنْ أَبِیهِ ع قَالَ: مَا یَأْخُذُ الْمَظْلُومُ مِنْ دِینِ الظَّالِمِ أَکْثَرَ مِمَّا یَأْخُذُ الظَّالِمُ مِنْ دُنْیَا الْمَظْلُومِ.


5. - it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. al-Hassan who said it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. al-Hassan al-Saffar from Muhammad b. al-Hussain b. Abi al-Khattab from Ali b. Asbat from Sinan b. Abi Khalid al-Qammat al-Wasiti from Zayd b. Ali b. al-Hussain from his father (a.s) who said: “An oppressed person benefits from the faith of an oppressor much more than the oppressor benefits from the world of the oppressed person.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَلِیُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِیمَ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِی عُمَیْرٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ أُذَیْنَهَ عَنْ زُرَارَهَ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ: مَا أَحَدٌ یَظْلِمُ بِمَظْلِمَهٍ إِلَّا أَخَذَهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا فِی نَفْسِهِ وَ مَالِهِ فَأَمَّا الظُّلْمُ الَّذِی بَیْنَهُ وَ بَیْنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَإِذَا تَابَ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ.


6. My father (r.h) said: it was narrated to me by Ali b. Ibrahim from his father from Muhammad b. Abi ’Umayr from Umar b. Adheena from Zurarah from Abi Ja’far (a.s) who said: “One who does injustice to another the Almighty Allah takes accounts for the loss of wealth and life caused. However, He forgives the injustice between him and Allah if he repents.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَلِیِّ بْنِ الْحَکَمِ عَنْ أَبِی الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَرْقَطِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ع قَالَ: مَنِ ارْتَکَبَ أَحَداً بِظُلْمٍ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مَنْ یَظْلِمُهُ بِمِثْلِهِ أَوْ عَلَی وَلَدِهِ أَوْ عَلَی عَقِبِهِ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ.


7. My father (r.h) said: it was narrated to me by Sa’d b. Abdillah from Ahmad b. Muhammad and Ali b. al-Hakam from Abi al-Qasim from Uthman b. Abdillah from Muhammad b. Abdillah al-Arqat from Ja’far b. Muhammad (a.s) who said: “One who does injustice to someone else, the Almighty Allah does injustice to him, his children or his grandchildren through a third person.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارُ عَنْ یَعْقُوبَ بْنِ یَزِیدَ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِیسَی عَنْ رِبْعِیِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ فُضَیْلِ بْنِ یَسَارٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَنْ أَکَلَ مَالَ أَخِیهِ ظُلْماً وَ لَمْ یَرُدَّ عَلَیْهِ أَکَلَ جَذْوَهً مِنَ النَّارِ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَهِ.


8. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) said, “One who usurps the property of his brother by doing injustice to him, he will come on the Day of Judgment eating the fire of Hell.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَی بْنِ الْمُتَوَکِّلِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَیْنِ بْنِ أَبِی الْخَطَّابِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِی عُبَیْدَهَ الْحَذَّاءِ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مَنِ اقْتَطَعَ مَالَ مُؤْمِنٍ غَصْباً بِغَیْرِ حَقِّهِ لَمْ یَزَلِ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مُعْرِضاً عَنْهُ مَاقِتاً لِأَعْمَالِهِ الَّتِی یَعْمَلُهَا مِنَ الْبِرِّ وَ الْخَیْرِ لَا یُثْبِتُهَا فِی حَسَنَاتِهِ حَتَّی یَتُوبَ وَ یَرُدَّ الْمَالَ الَّذِی أَخَذَهُ إِلَی صَاحِبِهِ.


9. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “One who usurps the wealth of a believer unlawfully, Allah will have hatred and enmity with him and his good deeds will not be accepted till he repents and returns the wealth to its owner.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِیٍّ مَاجِیلَوَیْهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَلِیُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِیمَ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِیِّ عَنِ السَّکُونِیِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ آبَائِهِ ع قَالَ قَالَ أَمِیرُ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ ع أَعْظَمُ الْخَطَایَا اقْتِطَاعُ مَالِ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ بِغَیْرِ حَقٍّ.


10. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) narrates that Amirul Momineen (a.s) said, “One of the greatest sins is to usurp the wealth of a believer unlawfully.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ الْحَکَمِ عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ قَالَ عَلِیٌّ ع إِنَّمَا أخاف [خَافَ] الْقِصَاصَ مَنْ کَفَّ عَنْ ظُلْمِ النَّاسِ.


11. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) narrates that Amirul Momineen (a.s) said, “One who oppresses people, fears retaliation.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَلِیُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِیمَ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِی عُمَیْرٍ عَنْ حُسَیْنِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ وَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِی حَمْزَهَ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: إِنَّ اللَّهَ یُبْغِضُ الْغَنِیَّ الظَّلُومَ.


12. My father (r.h) said: it was narrated to me by Ali b. Ibrahim from his father from Muhammad b. Abi ’Umayr from Hussain b. Uthman and Muhammad b. Abi Hamzah from Abi Abdillah (a.s) who said: “Surely the Almighty Allah is enraged on a rich person who is unjust.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ الْحَکَمِ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع یَقُولُ إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَیَکُونُ مَظْلُوماً فَلَا یَزَالُ یَدْعُو حَتَّی یَکُونَ ظَالِماً.


13. It is narrated that Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) said, “Sometimes a person is a victim of oppression and he curses till the time he himself becomes the oppressor.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ یَحْیَی الْعَطَّارُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ أَبِی نَهْشَلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: مَنْ عَذَرَ ظَالِماً بِظُلْمِهِ سَلَّطَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَی عَلَیْهِ مَنْ یَظْلِمُهُ فَإِنْ دَعَا لَمْ یَسْتَجِبْ لَهُ وَ لَمْ یَأْجُرْهُ اللَّهُ عَلَی ظُلَامَتِهِ.


14. My father (r.h) said: it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Yahya al-’Attar from Ahmad b. Abi Abdillah from his father from Abi Nahshal from Abdillah b. Sinan from Abi Abdillah (a.s) who said: “One who keeps quiet when an oppressor is doing injustice, the Almighty Allah makes that oppressor overpower him. He does not accept the prayer of the oppressed and does not reward him for injustice done to him.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَلِیُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِیمَ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِیِّ عَنِ السَّکُونِیِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ آبَائِهِ ع قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مَنْ ظَلَمَ أَحَداً فَفَاتَهُ فَاسْتَغْفَرَ اللَّهَ تَعَالَی فَإِنَّهُ کَفَّارَهٌ لَهُ.


15. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) narrates from his ancestors that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “One who oppresses someone and cannot meet the oppressed once again, he should do Istighfar (seek Allah’s forgiveness). It is atonement for the injustice done by him.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِیسَی الْیَقْطِینِیِّ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِیمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَمِیدِ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ أَبِی حَمْزَهَ عَنْ أَبِی بَصِیرٍ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ: مَا انْتَصَرَ اللَّهُ مِنْ ظَالِمٍ إِلَّا بِظَالِمٍ وَ ذَلِکَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَ وَ کَذلِکَ نُوَلِّی بَعْضَ الظَّالِمِینَ بَعْضاً


16. My father (r.h) said: from Sa’d b. Abdillah from Muhammad b. Isa al-Yaqteeni from Ibrahim b. Abdul-Hameed from Ali b. Abi Hamzah from Abi Basir from Abi Ja’far (a.s) who said: “Allah takes the revenge of an unjust from another unjust person. It is in accordance with the verse: And thus do We make some of the iniquitous to rule upon others on account of what they earned.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِیسَی عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع یَقُولُ مَنْ أَعَانَ ظَالِماً عَلَی مَظْلُومٍ لَمْ یَزَلِ اللَّهُ عَلَیْهِ سَاخِطاً حَتَّی یَنْزِعَ مِنْ مَعُونَتِهِ.


17. It is narrated that Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) said, “One who helps an unjust against his victim, the Almighty Allah will be enraged upon him till the time he stops helping him.”
