9. At-Tawbah
التوبة
al-Tawbah (Repentance)
ٱلتَّوْبَة
9:42
لَوْ
كَانَ
عَرَضًا
قَرِيبًا
وَسَفَرًا
قَاصِدًا
لَّاتَّبَعُوكَ
وَلَكِن
بَعُدَتْ
عَلَيْهِمُ
الشُّقَّةُ
وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ
بِاللَّهِ
لَوِ
اسْتَطَعْنَا
لَخَرَجْنَا
مَعَكُمْ
يُهْلِكُونَ
أَنفُسَهُمْ
وَاللَّهُ
يَعْلَمُ
إِنَّهُمْ
لَكَاذِبُونَ
law kāna ʿaraḍan qarīban wa-safaran qāṣidan la-ttabaʿūka wa-lākin baʿudat ʿalayhimu sh-shuqqatu wa-sa-yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi lawi staṭaʿnā la-kharajnā maʿakum yuhlikūna ʾanfusahum wa-llāhu yaʿlamu ʾinnahum la-kādhibūna
Had the gain been immediate or the journey shorter, they (hypocrites) would certainly have followed you, (Muhammad), but it was too far for them. They will swear by God, "Had we had the ability, we would certainly have marched with you." They destroy only themselves and God knows that they are lying.
