إِذْ يُغَشِّيكُمُ النُّعَاسَ أَمَنَةً مِّنْهُ وَيُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُم مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً لِّيُطَهِّرَكُم بِهِ وَيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمْ رِجْزَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَلِيَرْبِطَ عَلَى قُلُوبِكُمْ وَيُثَبِّتَ بِهِ الْأَقْدَامَ
When He covered you with a trance as a [sense of] security from Him, and He sent down water from the sky to purify you with it, and to repel from you the defilement of Satan, and to fortify your hearts, and to make [your] feet steady with it.

Commentary on Quran 8:11
[Pooya/Ali Commentary 8:11] The Muslim army, wearied with its long march needed a refreshing rest, therefore the Lord arranged it for them. It rained during the night, rendering the hard soil on which the pagans were moving heavy and fatiguing, and making the soft sand which the Muslims had to cross hard and more firm to walk upon. The "pollution of Shaytan" refers to his evil suggestions that had Allah willed to assist them they would not face such distress and hardship. The rain which fell in the night formed a little pool of water to be used for necessary purification.

Commentary on Quran 8:11-19
1. Note Divine Help in form of rain and storm whereby one party benefits and the opposite loses. Also, Divine fright infused by angels which causes faction in the faithful is Divine, provided steadfastness and trust are maintained in God. Obedience to God and the Prophet are in view. 2. Infidels suffer defeat in the world and get hell in eternity. 3. Running away from the crusade is infidelity, except with a view to rendering help to one’s own party. God decides on intentions in flight. 4. Success is from God alone, Who grants courage, strength and tactics to handle the enemy.
