Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Hammad, from Hariz, from Zurarah:
Abu Ja‘far عليه السلام, peace be upon him, said: “When you rise at night from your sleep, say: ‘Praise be to Allah سبحانه وتعالى who returned my soul to me so that I may praise Him عز وجل and worship Him عز وجل.’ And when you hear the sound of the roosters, say: ‘Holy, Holy, is our Lord عز وجل and the Lord عز وجل of the angels and the Spirit. Your عز وجل mercy has preceded Your عز وجل wrath. There is no god but You عز وجل, alone with no partner. I have done evil and wronged myself, so forgive me and have mercy on me. Indeed, none forgives sins except You عز وجل.’ Then when you stand up, look at the horizons of the sky and say: ‘O Allah سبحانه وتعالى, there is no night in prostration that is hidden from You عز وجل, nor a sky with towers, nor an earth with bedding, nor ‘layers of darkness, some above others’, nor a deep sea in which travellers travel during the night from among Your عز وجل creation. You عز وجل know ‘the betrayal of the eyes and what the breasts conceal’. The stars have disappeared, and the eyes have slept, and yet You عز وجل are ‘the Ever-Living, the Sustainer’, neither slumber nor sleep overtakes You عز وجل. Glory be to Allah سبحانه وتعالى, the Lord عز وجل of the worlds. And the God عز وجل of the Messengers, and praise be to Allah سبحانه وتعالى, the Lord عز وجل of the worlds.” Then recite the five verses from Surah Aal Imran: ‘Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth…’ until His عز وجل saying: ‘Indeed, You do not break the promise.”’ Then use the siwak (toothstick) and perform wudu (ablution). When you place your hand in the water, say: ‘In the name of Allah سبحانه وتعالى and by Allah سبحانه وتعالى. O Allah سبحانه وتعالى, make me among those who repent often and make me among those who purify themselves.’ When you finish, say: ‘Praise be to Allah سبحانه وتعالى, the Lord عز وجل of the worlds.’ When you stand for your prayer, say: ‘In the name of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, and by Allah سبحانه وتعالى, and to Allah سبحانه وتعالى, and from Allah سبحانه وتعالى, and whatever Allah سبحانه وتعالى wills. There is no power and no strength except through Allah سبحانه وتعالى. O Allah سبحانه وتعالى, make me among Your عز وجل visitors and among the frequenters of Your عز وجل mosques. O Lord عز وجل, open for me the door of Your عز وجل repentance, and close from me the door of Your عز وجل disobedience and every act of disobedience. Praise be to Allah سبحانه وتعالى, who made me among those who converse with Him عز وجل. O Allah سبحانه وتعالى, turn Your عز وجل face toward me, Exalted is Your عز وجل praise!’ Then begin the prayer with the takbir.
