Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abi’l Khattab narrated to us. He said: Ja`far b. Bashir al-Bajali narrated to us from Aban from `Abd al-Rahman b. A`yan from Abi Ja`far al-Baqir . He said:

Allah forgave a man from the people of the desert because of two phrases he would supplicate with: “O Allah! If You punish me, then that is what I deserve, but if You forgive me, then that is what You deserve (Allahumma in tu`adhibani fa ahl dhalik ana, wa in tughfir li fa ahl dhalik anta).” So, Allah forgave him.
