`Ali b. Ahmad b. Musa narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Kufi narrated to us from Sahl b. Ziyad al-Adami from Mubarak the servant of al-Rida from al-Rida `Ali b. Musa . He said:

A believer cannot be a believer until he has three characteristics: (1) A quality from his Lord, (2) a quality from his Prophet, and (3) a quality from his wali. As for the quality from his Lord, it is to conceal his secret. Allah says, “He is the Knower of the Unseen, disclosing it to no one.” (72:26) As for the quality from his Prophet, it is to be friendly with the people, for Allah ordered His Prophet (s) to be friendly with the people, saying, “Take to clemency, enjoin in established virtues, and veer away from the ignorant.” (7:199) As for the quality from his wali, it is to be patient during distress and affliction. Allah says, “Those who are patient during distress and affliction and time of tribulation: these are the ones who have been sincere, and these are the ones who have been Godfearing.” (2:177)
