Muhammad b. `Ali Majiluwayh narrated to us. He said: My uncle Muhammad b. Abi’l Qasim narrated to me. He said: Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to me from his father Muhammad b. Khalid from Khalaf b. Hammad al-Asadi from Abi’l Hasan al-`Abdi from al-A`mash from `Abaya b. Rabi`i. He said:

A young man from the Ansar used to come to `Abdullah b. `Abbas, and `Abdullah used to honour him and bring him close. So, it was said to him: You honour this young man and bring him close while he is an evil young man who goes to the graves and exhumes them at night! So, `Abdullah b. `Abbas said: If that were the case, then inform me. He said: So, the young man went out one night and began digging up a grave. `Abdullah b. `Abbas was informed of that, so he went to investigate his matter. He stood in a position where the young man could not see him. He said: So, he entered the grave that he dug. Then, he lay in the grave, and called out at the top of his voice: “Woe to me! When I enter lonely and alone, and the Earth sinks beneath me, it says: ‘No greeting and no welcome to you. I hated you while you were on my back, so how about while you are in my stomach!’ Surely, woe to me when I look at the prophets standing and the angels in rows. Who will save me from Your justice tomorrow? Who will deliver me from the tormented ones? Who will take me out of the punishment of the Fire? I disobeyed He who cannot be disobeyed. I made promises to my Lord, again and again, yet no sincerity nor loyalty was found in me.” He repeated this and wept. When he got out of the grave, Ibn `Abbas embraced him, and then said to him: The best of exhumers, the best of exhumers, the best of exhumers! Your exhuming is not for sins or errors. Then, they went.
