Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Ishaq رضي الله عنه narrated to us. He said: Abu Ahmad `Abd al-`Aziz b. Yahya al-Juludi al-Basri narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Zakariyya narrated to us. He said: Shu`ayb b. Waqid narrated to us. He said: Al-Qasim b. Bahram narrated from Layth from Mujahid from Ibn `Abbas. Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Ishaq narrated to us. He said: Abu Ahmad `Abd al-`Aziz b. Yahya al-Juludi narrated to us. He said: Al-Hasan b. Mehran said to us. He said: Salama b. Khalid narrated to us from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father عليه السلام. Regarding His saying, “They fulfill vows” (76:7), he said: al-Hasan and al-Husayn عليه السلام became ill when they were young children, so the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم and two men came to them. One man said [to `Ali]: “O Abu’l Hasan! If you make a vow to Allah regarding your two sons, Allah will heal them.” So, he said: “I will fast three days in gratitude to Allah.” Fatima عليها السلام said the same, and the two boys said: “And we will also fast three days.” Their maid Fidda said the same. So, Allah healed them, and they began fasting, and they had no food with them. So `Ali عليه السلام went to a Jewish neighbour of his named Sham`un, who was a weaver of wool. He said: “Can you give me a bundle of wool for the daughter of Muhammad to spin? In return, I will give you three bushels of barley.” He said: “Yes.” So, he gave it to him, and he came back with wool and barley and informed Fatima عليها السلام. She accepted them and spun one third of the wool. Then, she grounded and kneaded the barley, and baked five loaves from it – one for each person. `Ali عليه السلام prayed the sunset prayer with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم, then he returned to his house and the five of them sat down. `Ali عليه السلام was the first to break bread when a beggar came to the door and said: “Peace be unto you, O Ahl al-Bayt of Muhammad. I am a beggar from the beggars of the Muslims. Feed me from what you are eating, and Allah will feed you from tables of Paradise.” So, `Ali عليه السلام put the morsel down, and said: “O Fatima! You are glorious and certain in faith. O daughter of the best of all the people! Do you not see the desperate beggar, who came to the door hungry, complaining to Allah in poverty? He complained to us, starving and grieving. Every person relies upon what they can gain. Whomever does good will be given a grand fortune in a merciful Paradise, which Allah has forbidden for the stingy, who will be grieving and taken to Sijjin in the Fire and will drink from the blaze.” So, Fatima عليها السلام came forward and said, “Your wish is my command, O cousin. I am neither bothered nor dismayed. I am content with being heartfelt and with excellence. I hope that if I am satiated from starvation that I will stick to the good congregation and enter Paradise in intercession.” So, she gave it to the beggar, and they slept hungry. They awoke fasting, having tasted nothing but water. Then, she spun the second third of the wool. Then, she grounded and kneaded the barley, and baked five loaves from it – one for each person. `Ali عليه السلام prayed the sunset prayer with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم, then he returned to his house and the five of them sat down. `Ali عليه السلام was the first to break bread when an orphan from the orphans of the Muslims came to the door and said: “Peace be unto you, O Ahl al-Bayt of Muhammad. I am an orphan from the orphans of the Muslims. Feed me from what you are eating, and Allah will feed you from tables of Paradise.” So, `Ali عليه السلام put the morsel down, and said: “O Fatima, daughter of the Magnanimous Master; daughter of the Prophet who is not tight-fisted! Allah has sent us this orphan, and he who shows mercy today will be shown mercy tomorrow. His reward will be the Paradise of Bliss, which Allah has prohibited to the hard-hearted. They will be plunged into the Fire of Hell; their beverage is pus and flesh.” So, Fatima عليها السلام came forward and said: “I shall give to him, and I do not mind. I will leave my children to the providence of Allah, for they, my two young lions, will sleep hungry. The younger of them will be murdered in the massacre of Karbala’. Woe to his killers, who will be plunged into the lowest depth of the Fire. Their chains will only increase.” Then, she gave him everything that was on the serving board, and they slept hungry, having tasted nothing but water. They awoke fasting. Then, Fatima عليها السلام spun the last third of the wool. Then, she grounded and kneaded the barley, and baked five loaves from it – one for each person. `Ali عليه السلام prayed the sunset prayer with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم, then he returned to his house and the five of them sat down. `Ali عليه السلام was the first to break bread when a captive from the pagan captives came to the door and said: “Peace be unto you, O Ahl al-Bayt of Muhammad. You capture us, tighten the bind on us, and you do not feed us!” So, `Ali عليه السلام put the morsel down, and said: “O Fatima, daughter of the Prophet Ahmad, daughter of the Masterful Master-Prophet! A captive has come to you bound in chains complaining of his hunger. He who feeds today will find his reward tomorrow with the Most High, the One, the Unified. The sower will reap what he has sown. So, give him, and do not make him angry.” So, Fatima عليها السلام came forward and said: “All we have left of the bread is one bushel, which I feebly kneaded and baked with my own hand. By Allah, they are hungry. O Lord! Do not let me lose them due to their father’s goodness, generosity, and patience. I do not have a veil on my head. All I have is a cloak that I have woven.” Then, she gave him everything that was on the serving board, and they slept hungry. They awoke, and they had nothing. Shu`ayb said in his narration: `Ali went with al-Hasan and al-Husayn عليه السلام toward the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم, and they were shivering from hunger. When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم saw them, he said: “O Aba’l Hasan! What I have seen from you had harmed me intensely. Let us go to my daughter Fatima.” So, they went to her, and she was in her niche. Her stomach had inclined to her back due to the intensity of her hunger. Her eyes had sunk in. When the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم saw her, he hugged her and said: “Help her, Allah. You have spent three days like this!” So, Gabriel عليه السلام descended and said: “O Muhammad! Take what Allah has prepared for your Ahl al-Bayt.” He said: “What shall I take, Gabriel?” He said: “Is there not a period of time when each human is nothing yet worth mentioning?” (76:1) – until he reached – “We feed you only for the sake of Allah, seeking neither reward nor thanks from you.” (76:9) Al-Hasan b. Mehran said in his narration: So, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم ran until he entered the house of Fatima عليها السلام. He saw their condition, so he gathered them and wept, saying: “You have spent three days like this, and I did not know!” So, Gabriel عليه السلام came down with these verses, “Surely, the righteous will drink from glasses, flavoured with camphor, from a spring where Allah’s servants will drink, flowing at their will.” (76:5-6) He said: It is a river in the house of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم, which will flow into the houses of the prophets and the believers. “They fulfill vows” (76:7) – meaning, `Ali, Fatima, al-Hasan, and al-Husayn عليه السلام toward their neighbours, who “fear a Day of sweeping horror” (76:7). Frowning and crying, they “give food to the poor, despite their desire for it” (76:8). Despite their yearning for food, they give it to the “needy” from the needy of the Muslims, the “orphan” from the orphans of the Muslims, and the “captive” from the captives of the pagans (76:8). When they feed them, they say: “We feed you only for the sake of Allah, seeking neither reward nor thanks from you.” (76:9) He said: By Allah, they did not say this to them, but rather they thought it in themselves, so Allah informed us of their thoughts. They said: “We do not need a reward from you by which we are satiated, nor do we need to be thanked by which we are commended. Rather, we only fed you for the sake of Allah and in pursuit of His reward. Allah says, “So Allah will deliver them from the horror of that Day, and grant them radiance” (76:11) – in their faces – “and joy” (76:11) – in their hearts. “And reward them for their perseverance with Paradise” (76:12) – to live in – “and silk” (76:12) to furnish and wear – “reclining therein on couches” (76:13) – and the couches are beds with canopied sheets – “seeing neither the Sun nor bitter cold” (76:13). Ibn `Abbas said: The people of Paradise will see something like the Sun illuminating the gardens. So, the people of Paradise will say: “O Lord! You say in Your Book, ‘seeing neither the Sun’ (76:13).” So, Allah will send Gabriel to them, who will say: “This is not the Sun. Rather, `Ali made Fatima smile, so the gardens have been illuminated by the light of their smile.” So, 76:1 – 76:22 was revealed regarding them.
