دُعَاؤُهُ إِذَا نَظَرَ إِلَى الْهِلَالِ

When he Looked at the New Crescent Moon

1
أيُّهَا الْخَلْقُ الْمُطِيعُ الدَّائِبُ السَّرِيعُ
ʾayyuhā al-khalqu al-muṭīʿu al-dāʾibu al-sarīʿu
O obedient creature, speedy and untiring,
2
الْمُتَرَدِّدُ فِي مَنَازِلِ التَّقْدِيْرِ،
al-mutaraddidu fi manazili al-taqdeer
frequenter of the mansions of determination,
3
الْمُتَصَرِّفُ فِي فَلَكِ التَّدْبِيرِ،
al-mutaṣarrif fī falak al-tadbīr
moving about in the sphere of governance!
4
آمَنْتُ بِمَنْ نَوَّرَ بِكَ الظُّلَمَ،
āmantu bi-man nawwara bika aẓ-ẓulama
I have faith in Him who lights up darknesses through thee,
5
وَأَوْضَحَ بِـكَ الْبُهَمَ،
wa 'awḍaḥa bika al-buhamah
illuminates jet-black shadows by thee,
6
وَجَعَلَكَ آيَةً مِنْ آياتِ مُلْكِهِ،
wa jaʿalaka ʾayatan min ʾayati mulkihi
appointed thee one of the signs of His kingdom
7
وَعَلاَمَةً مِنْ عَلاَمَاتِ سُلْطَانِهِ،
waʿalāmātan min ʿalāmāti sulṭānih
and one of the marks of His authority,
8
وَامْتَهَنَكَ بِالزِّيادَةِ وَالنُّقْصَانِ،
wa-amtahanaka bil-ziyadati wal-nuqsaan
and humbled thee through increase and decrease,
9
وَالطُّلُوعِ وَالأُفُولِ، وَالإِنارَةِ وَالْكُسُوفِ،
wal-ṭṭulūʿi wal-ufuli, wal-i’nārat wal-kusūfi
rising and setting, illumination and eclipse.
10
فِي كُلِّ ذلِكَ أَنْتَ لَهُ مُطِيعٌ وَإلى إرَادَتِهِ سَرِيعٌ،
fī kulli dhālika anta lahū muṭīʿun wa-ilā irādatihi sariʿun
In all of this thou art obedient to Him, prompt toward His will.

سُبْحَانَهُ مَا أَعْجَبَ مَا دَبَّرَ فِيْ أَمْرِكَ،
subḥānahu mā aʿjab ma dabbara fī amrika
Glory be to Him! How wonderful is what He has arranged in thy situation!
12
وَأَلْطَفَ مَا صَنعَ فِي شَأْنِكَ،
wa'altafa ma ṣanaʿa fī sha'nika
How subtle what He has made for thy task!
13
جَعَلَكَ مِفْتَاحَ شَهْر حَادِث لأَِمْر حادِث،
jaʿalaka miftāḥa shahr ḥādith li-amr ḥādith
He has made thee the key to a new month for a new situation.
14
فَأَسْأَلُ اللهَ رَبِّي وَرَبَّكَ
fa-as'alullaha rabbī wa rabbaka
So I ask God, my Lord and thy Lord,
15
وَخَالِقِي وَخَالِقَكَ وَمُقَدِّرِي وَمُقَدِّرَكَ
wa khāliqī wa khāliqak wa muqaddirī wa muqaddirak
my Creator and thy Creator, my Determiner and thy Determiner,
16
وَمُصَوِّرِي وَمُصَوِّرَكَ
wa musawwiri wa musawwiraka
my Form-giver and thy Form-giver,
17
أَنْ يُصَلِّي عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ،
'an yuṣallī 'alā muḥammad wa ālihī
that He bless Muhammad and his Household
18
وَأَنْ يَجْعَلَكَ هِلاَلَ بَرَكَة لاَ تَمْحَقُهَا الأيَّامُ،
wa-an yajʿalaka hilālan barakah lā tamḥaquhā al-ayyām
and appoint thee a crescent of blessings not effaced by days
19
وَطَهَارَة لاَ تُدَنِّسُهَا الآثامُ،
waṭahāratun lā tudannisuhā al-āthām
and of purity not defiled by sins;
20
هِلاَلَ أَمْن مِنَ الآفاتِ،
hilāla amn min al-ʾafāt
a crescent of security from blights
21
وَسَلاَمَة مِنَ السَّيِّئاتِ،
wasalāmata mina as-sayyiātِ
and of safety from evil deeds;
22
هِلاَلَ سَعْد لاَ نَحْسَ فِيْهِ،
hilāla saʿd lā naḥsa fīhi
a crescent of auspiciousness containing no misfortune,
23
وَيُمْن لاَ نَكَدَ مَعَهُ،
wayumnu laa nakada maʿahu
of prosperity accompanied by no adversity,
24
وَيُسْر لاَ يُمَازِجُهُ عُسْرٌ،
wayusr la yumāziġuhu ʿusr
of ease not mixed with difficulty,
25
وَخَيْر لاَ يَشُوبُهُ شَرٌّ،
wa khayr la yashubuhu shar
of good unstained by evil;
26
هِلاَلَ أَمْن وَإيمَان وَنِعْمَة وَإحْسَان وَسَلاَمَة وَإسْلاَم.
hilāla amn wa ʾīmān wa niʿma wa iḥsān wa salāma wa ʾislām
a crescent of security and faith, favour and good-doing, safety and submission!
27
أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihī
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,
28
وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَرْضَى مَنْ طَلَعَ عَلَيْهِ،
wa-jaʿlna min arḍā man ṭalʿa ʿalayhi
place us among the most satisfied of those over whom the crescent has risen,
29
وَأَزْكَى مَنْ نَظَرَ إليْهِ،
waʾazkā man naẓara ʾilayhi
the purest of those who have looked upon it,
30
وَأَسْعَدَ مَنْ تَعَبَّدَ لَكَ فِيهِ،
wa-asʿada man taʿabbada laka fiih
the most fortunate of those who have worshipped Thee under it;
31
وَوَفِّقْنَا فِيهِ لِلتَّوْبَةِ،
wa waffiqnā fīhi liltawbah
give us the success during [the new month] to repent,
32
وَاعْصِمْنَـا فِيْهِ مِنَ الْحَـوْبَةِ،
waʿṣimnā fīhi min al-ḥawbah
preserve us within it from misdeeds,
33
وَاحْفَظْنَا فِيهِ مِنْ مُبَاشَرَةِ مَعْصِيَتِكَ،
wa aḥfaẓnā fīhi min mubāsharati maʿṣiyatika
guard us therein from pursuing disobedience to Thee,
34
وَأَوْزِعْنَا فِيهِ شُكْرَ نِعْمَتِكَ،
wa auziʿna fihi shukra niʿmatik
allot to us within it thanksgiving for Thy favour,
35
وَأَلْبِسْنَا فِيهِ جُنَنَ الْعَافِيَةِ،
wa'albisnā fīhi junnan al-ʿāfiyah
clothe us during it in the shields of well-being,
36
وَأَتْمِمْ عَلَيْنَا بِاسْتِكْمَالِ طَاعَتِكَ فِيهِ الْمِنَّةَ،
wa atmim ʿalayna bi-istikmali ṭāʿatika fīhi al-minna
and complete for us Thy kindness by perfecting therein obedience to Thee!
37
إنَّكَ الْمَنَّانُ الْحَمِيدُ،
innaka al-mannanu al-hamidu
Surely Thou art All-kind, Praiseworthy.
38
وَصَلَّى اللهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ الطَّيِّبِينَ الطَّاهِرِينَ.
waṣalla allāhu ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihi aṭ-ṭayyibīna aṭ-ṭāhirīna
And bless Muhammad and his Household, the good, the pure.
