526. ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm, from his father, and Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl, and others from Manṣūr ibn Yūnus, from Ibn Udhaynah, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Najāshī, who said: "I heard Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Sadiq saying regarding the statement of Allah, the Almighty and Glorious: «Those are the ones whose hearts Allah knows, so turn away from them, but admonish them and speak to them with a penetrating word» (4:63). By Allah, this refers to such-and-such individuals. And regarding the verse: «We did not send any messenger but to be obeyed by the permission of Allah. If only, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you (O Prophet) and asked Allah’s forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful» (4:64), by Allah, this refers to the Prophet ﷺ and ʿAlī in what they did. That is, if they had come to you, O ʿAlī, and sought forgiveness from Allah for what they did, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. «But no, by your Lord, they will not truly believe until they make you (O Prophet) a judge in all disputes between them and find no resistance within themselves against your decisions, and submit with full submission» (4:65). Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Sadiq said: "By Allah, this refers to ʿAlī himself. And they would not find any resistance in their hearts concerning what you, O Messenger of Allah, have decreed through your words, meaning by this the authority of ʿAlī, and they would submit fully to ʿAlī."
