The Perfumes
18 Aḥadīth
Ḥadīth 1

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الطِّيبُ مِنْ أَخْلَاقِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ .

1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), has said, ‘Using perfume is of the moral discipline of the Prophets/”

Ḥadīth 2

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْعِطْرُ مِنْ سُنَنِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ .

2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Yunus ibn Ya’qub from abu Usamah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Using perfume is of the discipline of the Messengers ‘Alayhim al-Salam.’”

Ḥadīth 3

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رِئَابٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ أَنَا مَعَ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ فَسَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِنَّ الرِّيحَ الطَّيِّبَةَ تَشُدُّ الْقَلْبَ وَ تَزِيدُ فِي الْجِمَاعِ .

3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from ibn Mahbub from ibn Ri’ab who has said the following: “I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), in the company of abu Basir. I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, saying, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said that good perfume strengthens the heart and increases the ability to go to bed with one’s wife.’”

Ḥadīth 4

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَمَّرِ بْنِ خَلَّادٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا يَنْبَغِي لِلرَّجُلِ أَنْ يَدَعَ الطِّيبَ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَقْدِرْ عَلَيْهِ فَيَوْمٌ وَ يَوْمٌ لَا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَقْدِرْ فَفِي كُلِّ جُمُعَةٍ وَ لَا يَدَعْ .

4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Mu’ammar ibn Khallad who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), has said, ‘A man must not ignore using perfumes every day, or every other day, if he cannot afford. If he cannot afford this, he must use perfume every Friday.’”

Ḥadīth 5

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) الطِّيبُ فِي الشَّارِبِ مِنْ أَخْلَاقِ النَّبِيِّينَ ( عليهم السلام ) وَ كَرَامَةٌ لِلْكَاتِبِينَ .

5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ’Isa from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Applying perfume to one’s mustache is of the discipline of the Prophets ‘Alayhim al-Salam, and honoring the scribes (the angels on one’s shoulders).”’

Ḥadīth 6

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ سَعْدَانَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الطِّيبُ يَشُدُّ الْقَلْبَ .

6. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ahmad ibn Ishaq from Sa’dan from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Applying perfume strengthens the heart.’”

Ḥadīth 7

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَنْ تَطَيَّبَ أَوَّلَ النَّهَارِ لَمْ يَزَلْ عَقْلُهُ مَعَهُ إِلَى اللَّيْلِوَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) صَلَاةُ مُتَطَيِّبٍ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ صَلَاةً بِغَيْرِ طِيبٍ .

7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one uses perfume in the beginning of the day, his power of reason continues to work until the night.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Performing one Salat (prayer) with perfume is better than seventy Salat (prayer) without perfume.’”

Ḥadīth 8

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ مُوسَى قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ الْعِطْرُ مِنْ سُنَنِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ .

8. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ’Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Ali from al-‘Abbas ibn Musa who has said the following: I heard my father (a.s.), saying, ‘Al-‘Atr (perfume) is of the Sunnah of the messengers (of Allah).”’

Ḥadīth 9

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ ثَلَاثٌ أُعْطِيَهُنَّ الْأَنْبِيَاءُ ( عليهم السلام ) الْعِطْرُ وَ الْأَزْوَاجُ وَ السِّوَاكُ .

9. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Talhah ibn Zayd who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Three things were given to the Prophets. They are perfumes, marriage and toothbrushes.’”

Ḥadīth 10

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُوسَى بْنِ الْفُرَاتِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَطَرٍ عَنِ السَّكَنِ الْخَزَّازِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ حَقٌّ عَلَى كُلِّ مُحْتَلِمٍ فِي كُلِّ جُمُعَةٍ أَخْذُ شَارِبِهِ وَ أَظْفَارِهِ وَ مَسُّ شَيْ‏ءٍ مِنَ الطِّيبِ وَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ عِنْدَهُ طِيبٌ دَعَا بِبَعْضِ خُمُرِ نِسَائِهِ فَبَلَّهَا بِالْمَاءِ ثُمَّ وَضَعَهَا عَلَى وَجْهِهِ .

10. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Musa ibn al-Furat from Ali ibn Matar from al-Sakan al-Khazzaz who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘It is a right on every adult Muslim to trim his mustache every Friday, cut his fingernails and apply perfume. The Messenger of Allah, on Friday, when he could not find perfumes, soaked the scarf of one of his wives with water, then placed it on his face.’”

Ḥadīth 11

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ يُعْرَفُ مَوْضِعُ سُجُودِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) بِطِيبِ رِيحِهِ .

11. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad and a number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad all from al-Hassan ibn Ali who narrated that Abil Hasan (a.s.) who has said the following: “One could recognize the [place of Sujud (prostrations)] of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), because of its perfumes.’”

Ḥadīth 12

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ يَاسِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) قَالَ لِي حَبِيبِي جَبْرَئِيلُ ( عليه السلام ) تَطَيَّبْ يَوْماً وَ يَوْماً لَا وَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ لَا بُدَّ مِنْهُ وَ لَا تَتْرُكْ لَهُ .

12. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from [his father] from Yasar who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘My friend Jibril has told me to apply perfume one day and not on the next day. On Friday it is necessary and it must not be ignored.’”

Ḥadīth 13

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لِيَتَطَيَّبْ أَحَدُكُمْ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَ لَوْ مِنْ قَارُورَةِ امْرَأَتِهِ .

13. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘On Friday you must apply perfume: even if it is from the perfumes of your wives.’”

Ḥadīth 14

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ رَفَعَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مَظْعُونٍ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) قَدْ أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَدَعَ الطِّيبَ وَ أَشْيَاءَ ذَكَرَهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَا تَدَعِ الطِّيبَ فَإِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَسْتَنْشِقُ رِيحَ الطِّيبِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِ فَلَا تَدَعِ الطِّيبَ فِي كُلِّ جُمُعَةٍ .

14. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, “Uthman ibn Maz‘un once said to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, “I had decided to give up certain things, of which one is perfumes and other things.” The Messenger of Allah said, ‘You must not give up perfume; the angels smell fine perfume from believing people, so you must not ignore applying perfumes on Fridays.’”

Ḥadīth 15

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الطِّيبُ فِي الشَّارِبِ مِنْ أَخْلَاقِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ ( عليهم السلام ) وَ كَرَامَةٌ لِلْكَاتِبِينَ .

15. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman from Shu’ayb from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Applying perfume is of moral discipline of the Prophets and honoring the scribes (the two angels on one’s shoulders).”’

Ḥadīth 16

عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ زَكَرِيَّا الْمُؤْمِنِ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ مَا أَنْفَقْتَ فِي الطِّيبِ فَلَيْسَ بِسَرَفٍ .

16. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Zakariya al-Mu’min in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “He (the Imam) (a.s.), has said, ‘Your spending for perfumes is not useless spending. 5 ”

Ḥadīth 17

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) طِيبُ النِّسَاءِ مَا ظَهَرَ لَوْنُهُ وَ خَفِيَ رِيحُهُ وَ طِيبُ الرِّجَالِ مَا ظَهَرَ رِيحُهُ وَ خَفِيَ لَوْنُهُ .

17. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has stated this Hadith. ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, “Perfume for women is that which shows its color but hides its fragrance, and the perfume for men is that which spreads its fragrance but its color does not show.’””

Ḥadīth 18

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْخَثْعَمِيِّ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ الطَّوِيلِ الْعَطَّارِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يُنْفِقُ فِي الطِّيبِ أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا يُنْفِقُ فِي الطَّعَامِ .

18. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Sulayman from Muhammad al-Khath’amiy from Ishaq al- Tawil al-‘ Altar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, spent more on perfumes than his spending on food.”
