13 Aḥadīth
Ḥadīth 1

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى وَ ثِيابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ قَالَ فَشَمِّرْ .

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ‘ Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “About the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, . . and cleanse your clothes’, (74:4) abu £ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It means lift up (cut short) your clothes (instead of dragging them on the ground).”’

Ḥadīth 2

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَائِذٍ عَنْ أَبِي خَدِيجَةَ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ خُنَيْسٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ عَلِيّاً ( عليه السلام ) كَانَ عِنْدَكُمْ فَأَتَى بَنِي دِيوَانٍ وَ اشْتَرَى ثَلَاثَةَ أَثْوَابٍ بِدِينَارٍ الْقَمِيصَ إِلَى فَوْقِ الْكَعْبِ وَ الْإِزَارَ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ وَ الرِّدَاءَ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ إِلَى ثَدْيَيْهِ وَ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ إِلَى أَلْيَتَيْهِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ يَدَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا كَسَاهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ مَنْزِلَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا اللِّبَاسُ الَّذِي يَنْبَغِي لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ أَنْ يَلْبَسُوهُقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ لَكِنْ لَا يَقْدِرُونَ أَنْ يَلْبَسُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمَ وَ لَوْ فَعَلْنَاهُ لَقَالُوا مَجْنُونٌ وَ لَقَالُوا مُرَاءٍ وَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى يَقُولُ وَ ثِيابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ قَالَ وَ ثِيَابَكَ ارْفَعْهَا وَ لَا تَجُرَّهَا وَ إِذَا قَامَ قَائِمُنَا كَانَ هَذَا اللِّبَاسَ .

2. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ from Ahmad ibn ‘A’idh from abu Khadijah from Mu’alla’ ibn Khunayth who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin who lived among you once went to banu Diwan and bought three pieces of clothes for one dinar. One piece was a shirt, which in its length reached above his ankles, a loincloth, which in length reached to the middle of his leg, a gown that reached in his front side up to his breast and from the back down to his rump. He (’Amir al-Mu’minin) then raised his hand to the sky and continued praising Allah for providing him clothes until he (’Amir al-Mu’minin) reached his home and said, “This is the kind of clothes that is proper for the Muslims.’” Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘However, today they (Muslims) are not able to wear that kind of clothes, and if we do so they will say, “They have become insane and show off.” Allah, most Blessed, most High, says, “. . . and cleanse your clothes” meaning do not allow your clothes to be dragged on the ground. When our al-Q’a’im will rise this (the kind of clothes which ’Amir al- Mu’minin (a.s.), would wear) will be kind of his clothes.’”

Ḥadīth 3

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ قَالَ أَمَرَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنْ أَشْتَرِيَ لَهُ إِزَاراً فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنِّي لَسْتُ أُصِيبُ إِلَّا وَاسِعاً قَالَ اقْطَعْ مِنْهُ وَ كُفَّهُقَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ أَبِي قَالَ وَ مَا جَاوَزَ الْكَعْبَيْنِ فَفِي النَّارِ .مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ مِثْلَهُ .

3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yunus ibn Ya’qub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ya‘qub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Hilal who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once commanded me to buy a loincloth for him. I said that I could only find wide ones. He (the Imam) said, ‘You must cut it and stitch its borders.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘My father has said, “Whatever of loincloth passes down the ankles is in the fire.’” Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Yunus ibn Ya‘qub a similar Hadith.

Ḥadīth 4

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ كَانَ مَعَ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) أَيَّامَ حُبِسَ بِبَغْدَادَ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ لِنَبِيِّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ ثِيابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ وَ كَانَتْ ثِيَابُهُ طَاهِرَةً وَ إِنَّمَا أَمَرَهُ بِالتَّشْمِيرِ .

4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn ‘Uthman from a man from the people of al-Yamamah who was with abu al-Hassan (a.s.), in jail in Baghdad who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), once said to me, ‘Allah, most Blessed, most High, has said, to His Holy Prophet, ‘. . . and your clothes cleanse them,’ (74:4) his clothes were clean but He commanded him to raise them instead of keeping them long (that drag on the ground).”’

Ḥadīth 5

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) أَوْصَى رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي تَمِيمٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِيَّاكَ وَ إِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ وَ الْقَمِيصِ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَ اللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ .

5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn Mahbub from Hisham ibn Salim from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has stated this Hadith. ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once advised a man from banu Tamim and said to him, ‘You must never allow the loincloth and shirt to hang down to drag; it is the sign of arrogance and Allah does not love arrogance.’”

Ḥadīth 6

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْكُوفِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْسِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ نَظَرَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) إِلَى فَتًى مُرْخٍ إِزَارَهُ فَقَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ ارْفَعْ إِزَارَكَ فَإِنَّهُ أَبْقَى لِثَوْبِكَ وَ أَنْقَى لِقَلْبِكَ .

6. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Kufiy from ‘Ubays ibn Hisham from ibn from abu Hamzah in a marfu‘ manner has said, the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), once saw a young man with his loincloths hanging low, and said to him, ‘Son, you must raise your loincloth; it will last longer and help clean your heart (from arrogance).”’

Ḥadīth 7

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) إِذَا لَبِسَ الْقَمِيصَ مَدَّ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا طَلَعَ عَلَى أَطْرَافِ الْأَصَابِعِ قَطَعَهُ .

7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin when wearing a shirt would extend his hands. If the sleeves reached his fingers he would cut them short.’”

Ḥadīth 8

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ الصَّيْقَلِ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) تُرِيدُ أُرِيكَ قَمِيصَ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) الَّذِي ضُرِبَ فِيهِ وَ أُرِيكَ دَمَهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِهِ وَ هُوَ فِي سَفَطٍ فَأَخْرَجَهُ وَ نَشَرَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَمِيصُ كَرَابِيسَ يُشْبِهُ السُّنْبُلَانِيَّ فَإِذَا مُوَضَّعُ الْجَيْبِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَ إِذَا الدَّمُ أَبْيَضُ شِبْهُ اللَّبَنِ شِبْهُ شُطَبِ السَّيْفِ قَالَ هَذَا قَمِيصُ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) الَّذِي ضُرِبَ فِيهِ وَ هَذَا أَثَرُ دَمِهِ فَشَبَرْتُ بَدَنَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ ثَلَاثَةُ أَشْبَارٍ وَ شَبَرْتُ أَسْفَلَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شِبْراً .

8. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from his father from Muhammad ibn Sinan from al- Hassan al-Sayqal who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once asked me, ‘Do you like to see the shirt of ’Amir al- Mu’minin, Ali (a.s.) in which he sustained the injury, to show his blood (stain)?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I like to see it.’ He (the Imam) asked for it and it was brought in a basket. He (the Imam) opened and spread it out and it was a shirt made of cotton similar to those of al-Sunbalaniy (a place in Rome) and from the spot for its pocket down to the ground there was a white blood mark like the strike of a sword. He (the Imam) said, ‘This is the shirt of Ali (a.s.), in which he was mortally wounded and these are the traces of his blood.’ I measured it around his body; it was three shibr and around its bottom it was twelve shibr (the space between the tip of the thumb and the small finger when they are opened and stretched.”

Ḥadīth 9

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ الْحَجَّالِ عَنْ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَعْيَنَ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ قَمِيصَ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) الَّذِي قُتِلَ فِيهِ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) فَإِذَا أَسْفَلُهُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شِبْراً وَ بَدَنُهُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَشْبَارٍ وَ رَأَيْتُ فِيهِ نَضْحَ دَمٍ .

9. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from al-Hajj al from Tha’labah Ibn Maymun from Zurarah ibn A’yan who has said the following: “I saw the shirt of Ali (a.s.), in which he was mortally wounded. It was with abu Ja‘far (a.s.), its bottom measured twelve shibr and around his body it was three shibr and I saw marks of blood splashed on it.’”

Ḥadīth 10

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بَيَّاعِ الْقَلَانِسِ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) يَا بُنَيَّ أَ لَا تُطَهِّرُ قَمِيصَكَ فَذَهَبَ فَظَنَنَّا أَنَّ ثَوْبَهُ قَدْ أَصَابَهُ شَيْ‏ءٌ فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ هَكَذَا فَقُلْنَا جَعَلَنَا اللَّهُ فِدَاكَ مَا لِقَمِيصِهِ قَالَ كَانَ قَمِيصُهُ طَوِيلًا وَ أَمَرْتُهُ أَنْ يُقَصِّرَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ وَ ثِيابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ .

10. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn Ali from a man from Salmah Bayya’ al-Qalanis who has said the following: “I once was with abu Ja‘far, when abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), came. Abu Ja‘far, said, ‘You must cleanse your shirt.’ He left and we thought his shirt might have come in contact with something unclean. He came back and he (the Imam) said, ‘It just is as it was.’ We then asked saying, ‘We pray to Allah to keep our souls in service for your cause, what is wrong with his shirt?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘His shirt is long and I commanded him to shorten it; because Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, ‘. . . and cleanse (shorten) your clothes.’ (74:4)”

Ḥadīth 11

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ الطَّائِيِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ نَظَرَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِلَى رَجُلٍ قَدْ لَبِسَ قَمِيصاً يُصِيبُ الْأَرْضَ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا ثَوْبٌ طَاهِرٌ .

11. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from Yahya al-Halabiy from ‘Abd al-Hamid al-Ta’iy from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has narrated the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), looked at a man who had dressed in a shirt that dragged on the ground. He (the Imam) said, ‘This cloth is not clean.’”

Ḥadīth 12

عَنْهُ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ فِي الرَّجُلِ يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ قَالَ إِنِّي لَأَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَتَشَبَّهَ بِالنِّسَاءِ .

12. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah ibn Mehran who has said the following: “About the case of a man who was dragging his clothes behind him on the ground, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘I dislike one’s making himself look like a woman.’”

Ḥadīth 13

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَدَعَا بِأَثْوَابٍ فَذَرَعَ مِنْهُ فَعَمَدَ إِلَى خَمْسَةِ أَذْرُعٍ فَقَطَعَهَا ثُمَّ شَبَرَ عَرْضَهَا سِتَّةَ أَشْبَارٍ ثُمَّ شَقَّهُ وَ قَالَ شُدُّوا ضَفَّتَهُ وَ هَدِّبُوا طَرَفَيْهِ .

13. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Hudhayfah ibn Mansur who has said the following: “I once was with abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), and he asked for a piece of cloth. He (the Imam) took five yards from it, cut it, then measured it with his shibr and in width it was six shibr. He (the Imam) then asked to stitch its borders and trim its edges.’”
