The Toothpick
11 Aḥadīth
Ḥadīth 1

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) نَزَلَ جَبْرَئِيلُ ( عليه السلام ) عَلَيَّ بِالْخِلَالِ .

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) has said, ‘ Jibril came to me with the toothpick.’”

Ḥadīth 2

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَمِيلَةَ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) نَزَلَ جَبْرَئِيلُ ( عليه السلام ) عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) بِالسِّوَاكِ وَ الْخِلَالِ وَ الْحِجَامَةِ .

2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from abu Jamilah who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), once said to me, ‘Jibril came to the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) with the toothbrush, toothpick and cupping.’”

Ḥadīth 3

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَتَخَلَّلُ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) كَانَ يَتَخَلَّلُ وَ هُوَ يُطَيِّبُ الْفَمَ .

3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Mahbub from Wahab ibn ‘Abd Rabbibhi who has said the following: “I once saw abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), using toothpicks and I looked at him (the Imam). He (the Imam) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah would use a toothpick; it cleanses the mouth.’”

Ḥadīth 4

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَذَّاءِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَسَدِيِّ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ نَاوَلَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) جَعْفَرَ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ( عليه السلام ) خِلَالًا فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا جَعْفَرُ تَخَلَّلْ فَإِنَّهُ مَصْلَحَةٌ لِلْفَمِ أَوْ قَالَ لِلِّثَةِ وَ مَجْلَبَةٌ لِلرِّزْقِ .

4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ibrahim al-Hadhdha’ from Ahmad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Asadiy from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) once gave a toothpick to Ja‘far ibn abu Talib (a.s.), and said, ‘O Ja‘far use a toothpick. It is beneficial for the mouth’ or he said, ‘It is beneficial for the gums and attracts sustenance.’”

Ḥadīth 5

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) تَخَلَّلُوا فَإِنَّهُ مَصْلَحَةٌ لِلِّثَةِ وَ النَّوَاجِدِ .

5. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) has said, ‘You must use a toothpick it is beneficial for the gums and the molars.’”

Ḥadīth 6

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) تَخَلَّلُوا فَإِنَّهُ يُنَقِّي الْفَمَ وَ مَصْلَحَةٌ لِلِّثَةِ .

6. A group of our companions narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Ash'ari, from Ibn al-Qaddah, from Abu Abdullah (a.s.), who said: "The Prophet (s.a.w.) said: 'Use a toothpick, for it cleans the mouth and is beneficial for the gums.'"

Ḥadīth 7

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَمَّنْ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) أُتِيَ بِخِلَالٍ مِنَ الْأَخِلَّةِ الْمُهَيَّأَةِ وَ هُوَ فِي مَنْزِلِ فَضْلِ بْنِ يُونُسَ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهَا شَظِيَّةً وَ رَمَى الْبَاقِيَ .

7. A group of our companions narrated from Ahmad ibn Abi Abdullah, from his father, from Ali ibn al-Nu’man, from Ya'qub ibn Shu'ayb, from someone who informed him that Abu al-Hasan (a.s.) was brought a selection of prepared toothpicks while he was in the house of Fadl ibn Yunus. He took one piece from them and discarded the rest.

Ḥadīth 8

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا تَخَلَّلُوا بِعُودِ الرَّيْحَانِ وَ لَا بِقَضِيبِ الرُّمَّانِ فَإِنَّهُمَا يُهَيِّجَانِ عِرْقَ الْجُذَامِ .

8. Ali ibn Ibrahim narrated from his father, from Ibn Abi Umayr, from Ibrahim ibn Abdul-Hamid, from Abu al-Hasan (a.s.), who said: "Do not use a basil twig or a pomegranate branch as a toothpick, for they both can stimulate the nerve of leprosy."

Ḥadīth 9

عَلِيٌّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَنْ تَخَلَّلَ بِالْقَصَبِ لَمْ تُقْضَ لَهُ حَاجَةٌ سِتَّةَ أَيَّامٍ .

9. Ali narrated from Muhammad ibn Isa, from Yunus ibn Abd al-Rahman, from someone who mentioned it from Abu Abdullah (a.s.), who said: "Whoever uses a reed as a toothpick will not have any of their wishes fulfilled for six days."

Ḥadīth 10

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) أَنْ يُتَخَلَّلَ بِالْقَصَبِ وَ الرَّيْحَانِ .

10. Ali ibn Ibrahim narrated from his father, from al-Nawfali, from al-Sukuni, from Abu Abdullah (a.s.), who said: "The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) forbade the use of reeds and basil twigs as toothpicks."

Ḥadīth 11

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الدِّهْقَانِ عَنْ دُرُسْتَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَتَخَلَّلُ بِكُلِّ مَا أَصَابَ مَا خَلَا الْخُوصَ وَ الْقَصَبَ .

11. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from certain ones who narrated who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a) used to use anything he could find to clean between his teeth, except for palm leaves and reeds.'”
