17 Aḥadīth
Ḥadīth 1

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ قَدْ سَمَّاهُ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَصْدَقُ الْأَسْمَاءِ مَا سُمِّيَ بِالْعُبُودِيَّةِ وَ أَفْضَلُهَا أَسْمَاءُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ .

1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Faddal from abu Ishaq, Tha’labah ibn Maymun from a man whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, The truest name is that which expresses one’s slavery to (Allah) and the best of them are names of the Prophets.’”

Ḥadīth 2

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ جَدِّي قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) سَمُّوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُولَدُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ تَدْرُوا أَ ذَكَرٌ أَمْ أُنْثَى فَسَمُّوهُمْ بِالْأَسْمَاءِ الَّتِي تَكُونُ لِلذَّكَرِ وَ الْأُنْثَى فَإِنَّ أَسْقَاطَكُمْ إِذَا لَقُوكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ لَمْ تُسَمُّوهُمْ يَقُولُ السِّقْطُ لِأَبِيهِ أَلَّا سَمَّيْتَنِي وَ قَدْ سَمَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مُحَسِّناً قَبْلَ أَنْ يُولَدَ .

2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from Abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘My father narrated to me from my grandfather that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Name your children before they are born: and if you do not know they are male or female, then name them with such names that are good for both male and female. In case a child is miscarried, when that child will meet you on the Day of Judgment, whom you had not given a name, it will say to his father, ‘I wish you had named me.’ The Messenger of Allah had named Muhsin before his birth.’”

Ḥadīth 3

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفُضَيْلِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَوَّلُ مَا يَبَرُّ الرَّجُلُ وَلَدَهُ أَنْ يُسَمِّيَهُ بِاسْمٍ حَسَنٍ فَلْيُحْسِنْ أَحَدُكُمُ اسْمَ وَلَدِهِ .

3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn Ali from Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl from Musa ibn Bakr who has said the following: “The first good thing that a father can do to his children is to give them good names. You must find a good name for (each of) your children.’”

Ḥadīth 4

أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا يُولَدُ لَنَا وَلَدٌ إِلَّا سَمَّيْنَاهُ مُحَمَّداً فَإِذَا مَضَى لَنَا سَبْعَةُ أَيَّامٍ فَإِنْ شِئْنَا غَيَّرْنَا وَ إِنْ شِئْنَا تَرَكْنَا .

4. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from certain persons of our people from those whom he has mentioned who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘We name every child born to us Muhammad and after seven days if we like we change or keep the same name.’”

Ḥadīth 5

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنِ ابْنِ مَيَّاحٍ عَنْ فُلَانِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ شَاوَرَهُ فِي اسْمِ وَلَدِهِ فَقَالَ سَمِّهِ بِأَسْمَاءٍ مِنَ الْعُبُودِيَّةِ فَقَالَ أَيُّ الْأَسْمَاءِ هُوَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ .

5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-FIakam from ibn Mayyah from Fulan ibn Flamid ibn Flamid who has said the following: “I asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), for advice about the name of my child and he (the Imam) said, ‘Name him with the names that express slavery (to Allah).’ He then asked, ‘Which ones are they?’ He (the Imam) said, “Abd al-Rahman.’”

Ḥadīth 6

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ عَمِّهِ عَاصِمٍ الْكُوزِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) قَالَ مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ أَرْبَعَةُ أَوْلَادٍ لَمْ يُسَمِّ أَحَدَهُمْ بِاسْمِي فَقَدْ جَفَانِي .

6. Al-FIusayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from Sulayman ibn Sama‘ah from his uncle ‘Asem al-Kuziy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If four sons are born to someone and he does not name even one of them with my name he has done injustice to me.’”

Ḥadīth 7

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَزْرَمِيِّ قَالَ اسْتَعْمَلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ مَرْوَانَ بْنَ الْحَكَمِ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ وَ أَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَفْرِضَ لِشَباب قُرَيْشٍ فَفَرَضَ لَهُمْ فَقَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ مَا اسْمُكَ فَقُلْتُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ فَقَالَ مَا اسْمُ أَخِيكَ فَقُلْتُ عَلِيٌّ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ وَ عَلِيٌّ مَا يُرِيدُ أَبُوكَ أَنْ يَدَعَ أَحَداً مِنْ وُلْدِهِ إِلَّا سَمَّاهُ عَلِيّاًثُمَّ فَرَضَ لِي فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى أَبِي فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ وَيْلِي عَلَى ابْنِ الزَّرْقَاءِ دَبَّاغَةِ الْأَدَمِ لَوْ وُلِدَ لِي مِائَةٌ لَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ لَا أُسَمِّيَ أَحَداً مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا عَلِيّاً .

7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad formal-Barqiy from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-‘Arzamiy who has said the following: “Mu‘awiyah appointed Marwan ibn al-Hakam as his agent in al-Madinah and ordered him to pay a certain salary to the young people of Quraysh which he did. Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘I went to him and he asked, ‘What is your name?’ I replied, ‘It is Ali ibn al-Husayn.’ He then asked, ‘What is the name of your brother?’ I replied, ‘It is Ali.’ He said, ‘Ali and Ali. Is it that your father does not want to leave any of his children without naming them all Ali?’ He paid me a certain amount. I returned to my father and informed him of what had happened. He (the Imam) said, ‘Woe is upon the son of al-Zarqa’, the leather- treating man. Even if one hundred sons will be born to me I will not give anyone of them any other name except Ali.’”

Ḥadīth 8

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ الْجَعْفَرِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْفَقْرُ بَيْتاً فِيهِ اسْمُ مُحَمَّدٍ أَوْ أَحْمَدَ أَوْ عَلِيٍّ أَوِ الْحَسَنِ أَوِ الْحُسَيْنِ أَوْ جَعْفَرٍ أَوْ طَالِبٍ أَوْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَوْ فَاطِمَةَ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ.

8. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Bakr ibn Salih from Sulayman al-Ja‘fariy who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan (a.s.), saying, ‘Poverty does not enter a house wherein a person’s name is Muhammad or Ahmad or Ali or al-Hassan or al-Husayn or Ja‘far or Talib or ‘Abd Allah or Fatimah of the women.’”

Ḥadīth 9

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وُلِدَ لِي غُلَامٌ فَمَاذَا أُسَمِّيهِ قَالَ سَمِّهِ بِأَحَبِّ الْأَسْمَاءِ إِلَيَّ حَمْزَةَ .

9. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once a man came to the Holy Prophet (saww) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, a son is born to me, what should I name him?’ The Messenger of Allah replied, ‘Name him with the most beloved of names to me; Hamza.’”

Ḥadīth 10

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) اسْتَحْسِنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ فَإِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ قُمْ يَا فُلَانَ بْنَ فُلَانٍ إِلَى نُورِكَ وَ قُمْ يَا فُلَانَ بْنَ فُلَانٍ لَا نُورَ لَكَ .

10. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Husayn ibn Zayd ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn from his father who has said the following: “This is a narration of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), from the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. He (the Messenger of Allah) has said, ‘You should give yourselves good names; on the Day of Judgment you will be called with your names: O so and so son of so and so, stand up to your light and stand up, O so and so son of so and so, you have no light.’”

Ḥadīth 11

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ عَنْ مَعْمَرِ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) مَا تُكَنَّى قَالَ قُلْتُ مَا اكْتَنَيْتُ بَعْدُ وَ مَا لِي مِنْ وَلَدٍ وَ لَا امْرَأَةٍ وَ لَا جَارِيَةٍ قَالَ فَمَا يَمْنَعُكَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ حَدِيثٌ بَلَغَنَا عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ وَ مَا هُوَ قُلْتُ بَلَغَنَا عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَنِ اكْتَنَى وَ لَيْسَ لَهُ أَهْلٌ فَهُوَ أَبُو جَعْرٍ فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) شَوْهٌ لَيْسَ هَذَا مِنْ حَدِيثِ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّا لَنُكَنِّي أَوْلَادَنَا فِي صِغَرِهِمْ مَخَافَةَ النَّبَزِ أَنْ يَلْحَقَ بِهِمْ .

11. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Salih al-Sindiy from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from Sa‘id ibn Khuthaym from Mu’ammar ibn Khuthaym who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), once asked me, ‘What is your Kunyah (father of so and so or son of so and so)?’ I replied, ‘I have no Kunyah yet; I have no son or wife or daughter.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What keeps you from having one?’ I replied, ‘It is a Hadith which is narrated from Ali (a.s.). ’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is it?’ I replied, ‘Ali (a.s.), has said, “If one adopts a Kunyah and he does not have a wife he then is father of al-Ja‘r (dried up dung).”’ Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), then said that it is forged and it is not of Hadith of Ali (a.s.). We give Kunyah to our children in their childhood for fear of bad names being ascribed to them.’”

Ḥadīth 12

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ نَصْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شِمْرٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ أَرَادَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) الرُّكُوبَ إِلَى بَعْضِ شِيعَتِهِ لِيَعُودَهُ فَقَالَ يَا جَابِرُ الْحَقْنِي فَتَبِعْتُهُ فَلَمَّا انْتَهَى إِلَى بَابِ الدَّارِ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا ابْنٌ لَهُ صَغِيرٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) مَا اسْمُكَ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ قَالَ فَبِمَا تُكَنَّى قَالَ بِعَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) لَقَدِ احْتَظَرْتَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ احْتِظَاراً شَدِيداً إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ إِذَا سَمِعَ مُنَادِياً يُنَادِي يَا مُحَمَّدُ يَا عَلِيُّ ذَابَ كَمَا يَذُوبُ الرَّصَاصُ حَتَّى إِذَا سَمِعَ مُنَادِياً يُنَادِي بِاسْمِ عَدُوٍّ مِنْ أَعْدَائِنَا اهْتَزَّ وَ اخْتَالَ .

12. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Muslim from al-Husayn ibn Nasr from his father from ‘Amr ibn Shamir from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), once wanted to visit one of his followers because he was ill. He (the Imam) told me to follow him and I followed him (the Imam). When he (the Imam) arrived at his door his small son came out and abu Ja‘far (a.s.), asked, ‘What is your name?’ He replied, ‘It is Muhammad.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is your Kunyah ?’ He replied, ‘It is Ali.’ Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), then said, ‘You have fortified yourself against Satan very intensely. When Satan hears someone calling O Muhammad, O Ali, Satan melts like lead until he hears someone calling with the names of our enemies; he becomes excited and swaggers.’”

Ḥadīth 13

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ صَفْوَانَ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ أَوْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ هَذَا مُحَمَّدٌ أُذِنَ لَهُمْ فِي التَّسْمِيَةِ بِهِ فَمَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُمْ فِي يس يَعْنِي التَّسْمِيَةَ وَ هُوَ اسْمُ النَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ).

13. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Safwan ibn in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, or abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has stated this Hadith. ‘This is ‘Muhammad’ (the Messenger of Allah) who has given them permission to name themselves with his name. However, who has given them permission to name themselves ‘Yasin’ which is the name of the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause )?’”

Ḥadīth 14

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) دَعَا بِصَحِيفَةٍ حِينَ حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَنْهَى عَنْ أَسْمَاءٍ يُتَسَمَّى بِهَا فَقُبِضَ وَ لَمْ يُسَمِّهَا مِنْهَا الْحَكَمُ وَ حَكِيمٌ وَ خَالِدٌ وَ مَالِكٌ وَ ذَكَرَ أَنَّهَا سِتَّةٌ أَوْ سَبْعَةٌ مِمَّا لَا يَجُوزُ أَنْ يُتَسَمَّى بِهَا .

14. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah asked for a sahifah (a book) and he (the Messenger of Allah) wanted to prohibit the use of certain names to use. He (the Messenger of Allah) passed away but he (the Messenger of Allah) did not mention them. Of such names are al- Hakam and Hakim, Khalid and Malik. He (the Imam) said that such names are six or seven and it is not permissible to use them.’”

Ḥadīth 15

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) نَهَى عَنْ أَرْبَعِ كُنًى عَنْ أَبِي عِيسَى وَ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَكَمِ وَ عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ وَ عَنْ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ إِذَا كَانَ الِاسْمُ مُحَمَّداً .

15. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy from Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), “that the Prophet (sw) prohibited using four epithets; Abu ‘Isa, Abu al-Hakam, Abu Malik, and Abu al-Qasim if the name is Muhammad.’”

Ḥadīth 16

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ أَبْغَضَ الْأَسْمَاءِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ حَارِثٌ وَ مَالِكٌ وَ خَالِدٌ .

16. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Hilal from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘The most hated names to Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, are Harith, Malik and Khalid.’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ إِنَّ رَجُلًا كَانَ يَغْشَى عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ كَانَ يُكَنَّى أَبَا مُرَّةَ فَكَانَ إِذَا اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَيْهِ يَقُولُ أَبُو مُرَّةَ بِالْبَابِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) بِاللَّهِ إِذَا جِئْتَ إِلَى بَابِنَا فَلَا تَقُولَنَّ أَبُو مُرَّةَ .

17. Muhammad ibn al-Husayn has narrated from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from ibn Bukayr from Zurarah who has said the following: “I once heard abu Ja‘far (a.s.), saying, ‘A man would come to Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), and his Kunyah was abu Murrah. When asking for permission at the door he would say, ‘This is abu Murrah at the door.’ Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), said to him, ‘I swear you to Allah that when you come to our door do not say, ‘This is abu Murrah at the door (it is Kunyah of Satan).”’
