Chapter on Reward of Fasting

Hadith 1

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ اَلْحَكَمِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ بَكْرٍ قَالَ:» لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ زَكَاةٌ وَ زَكَاةُ اَلْأَجْسَامِ اَلصَّوْمُ«.

Muhammad ibn Yaqub, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Hakam, from Musa ibn Bakr, who said: He said: “For everything there is a zakat, and the zakat of the body is fasting.”

Hadith 2

وَ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ إِدْرِيسَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ اَلنُّعْمَانِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اَللَّهِ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ:»اَ ل صَّ ا ئِ مُ فِ ي عِ بَ ا دَ ةٍ وَ إِ نْ كَا نَ عَ لَ ى فِ رَ ا شِ هِ مَا لَمْ يَغْتَبْ مُسْلِماً«.

And from him, from Ahmad ibn Idris, from Muhammad ibn Hassan, from Muhammad ibn Ali, from Ali ibn al-Numan, from Abdullah ibn Talhah, from Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, who said: Imam (a.s) said: “The Messenger of Allah (swt), may Allah (swt) bless him and his family, said: ‘The fasting person is in worship, even if he is upon his bed, so long as he does not backbite a Muslim.’”

Hadith 3

وَعَنْهُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ اَلنَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ اَلسَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ قَالَ:» مَنْ كَثُرَ صَوْمُهُ قَالَ اَللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لِمَلاَئِكَتِهِ» عَبْدِي اِسْتَجَارَ مِنْ عَذَابِي فَأَجِيرُوهُ« وَ وَكَّلَ اَللَّهُ مَلاَئِكَتَهُ بِالدُّعَاءِ لِلصَّائِمِينَ وَ لَمْ يَأْمُرْ بِالدُّعَاءِ لِأَحَدٍ إِلاَّ اِسْتَجَابَ لَهُمْ فِيهِ«.

And from him, from Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from al-Nawfali, from al-Sakuni, from Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, who said: Imam (a.s) said: “Whoever fasts much, Allah (swt), Mighty and Majestic, says to His (swt) angels, ‘My servant has sought refuge from My (swt) punishment, so grant him refuge.’ And Allah (swt) appoints His (swt) angels to supplicate for those who fast, and Allah (swt) has not commanded supplication for anyone except that Allah (swt) responds to them concerning him.”

Hadith 4

وَ عَنْهُ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْعَدَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ قَالَ:» نَوْمُ اَلصَّائِمِ عِبَادَةٌ وَ نَفَسُهُ تَسْبِيحٌ«.

And from him, from Ali, from Harun ibn Muslim, from Masadah, from Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, who said: Imam (a.s) said: “The sleep of the fasting person is worship, and his breath is glorification.”

Hadith 5

عَلِيُّ بْنُ اَلْحَسَنِ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ اَلْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ غَالِبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ بْنِ جَابِرٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ مَظْعُونٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِرَسُولِ اَللَّهِ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ يَا رَسُولَ اَللَّهِ أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَكَ عَنْ أَشْيَاءَ فَقَالَ »وَمَا هِيَ يَا عُثْمَانُ« قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَتَرَهَّبَ قَالَ» لاَ تَفْعَلْ يَا عُثْمَانُ فَإِنَّ تَرَهُّبَ أُمَّتِي اَلْقُعُودُ فِي اَلْمَسَاجِدِ وَاِنْتِظَارُ اَلصَّلاَةِ بَعْدَ اَلصَّلاَةِ« قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَرَدْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اَللَّهِ أَنْ أَخْتَصِيَ قَالَ» لاَ تَفْعَلْ يَا عُثْمَانُ فَإِنَّ اِخْتِصَاءَ أُمَّتِي اَلصِّيَامُ« مَعَ كَلاَمٍ طَوِيلٍ.

Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Faddal, from al-Abbas ibn Amir, from Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Ishaq ibn Ghalib, from Abdullah ibn Jabir, from Uthman ibn Madhun, who said: I (narrator) said to the Messenger of Allah (swt), may Allah (swt) bless him and his family: “O Messenger of Allah (swt), I wanted to ask you about some things.” So the Prophet (saws) said: “And what are they, O Uthman?” He (narrator) said: “I asked, ‘I wanted to become a monk (atarahhab).’” The Prophet (saws) said: “Do not do so, O Uthman, for the monasticism (tarahhub) of my community is sitting in the mosques and waiting for the prayer after the prayer.” He (narrator) said: “So I wanted, O Messenger of Allah (swt), to castrate myself.” The Prophet (saws) said: “Do not do so, O Uthman, for the castration (ikhtisa) of my community is fasting,” along with a lengthy statement.

Hadith 6

وَ عَنْهُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ بْنِ اَلْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ اَلشَّعِيرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَلَيْهِمَا اَلسَّلاَمُ:» أَنَّ اَلنَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ قَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ:» أَ لاَ أُ خْبِرُكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ إِنْ أَنْتُمْ فَعَلْتُمُوهُ تَبَاعَدَ اَلشَّيْطَانُ عَنْكُمْ كَمَا تَبَاعَدَ اَلْمَشْرِقُ مِنَ اَلْمَغْرِبِ« قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ» اَلصَّوْمُ يُسَوِّدُ وَجْهَهُ وَ اَلصَّدَقَةُ تَكْسِرُ ظَهْرَهُ وَ اَلْحُبُّ فِي اَللَّهِ وَاَلْمُوَازَرَةُ عَلَى اَلْعَمَلِ اَلصَّالِحِ يَقْطَعُ دَابِرَهُ وَاَلاِسْتِغْفَارُ يَقْطَعُ وَتِينَهُ« وَ قَالَ اَلنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ» لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ زَكَاةٌ وَ زَكَاةُ اَلْأَجْسَامِ اَلصِّيَامُ««.

And from him, from Amr ibn Uthman, from Abdullah ibn al-Mughirah, from Ismail ibn Abi Ziyad al-Shairi, from Abu Abdillah Imam Ja’far (a.s) from his father, Imam al-Baqir (a.s), peace be upon them both: Imam (a.s) said: “The Prophet (saws), may Allah (swt) bless him and his family, said to his companions: ‘Shall I not inform you of something which, if you do it, Satan will become distant from you just as the east is distant from the west?’” They (companions) said: “Yes.” The Prophet (saws) said: “Fasting blackens his (Satan) face, charity breaks his (Satan) back, love for the sake of Allah (swt) and mutual support in righteous action cut off his (Satan) root, and seeking forgiveness cuts off his life-vein.” And the Prophet (saws), may Allah (swt) bless him and his family, said: “For everything there is a zakat, and the zakat of the body is fasting.”

Hadith 7

وَعَنْهُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْ حَكَمِ بْنِ مِسْكِينٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ يَقُولُ: »إِنَّ اَلرَّجُلَ لَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَيُوجِبُ اَللَّهُ لَهُ بِهِمَا اَلْجَنَّةَ أَوْ يَصُومُ يَوْماً تَطَوُّعاً فَيُوجِبُ اَللَّهُ لَهُ بِهِ اَلْجَنَّةَ«.

And from him, from Ali ibn Asbat, from Hakam ibn Miskin, from Ismail ibn Yasar, who said: I (narrator) heard Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, saying: “Indeed, a man may pray two rakahs, and Allah (swt) makes Paradise obligatory for him through them, Or he may fast one day voluntarily, and Allah (swt) makes Paradise obligatory for him through it.”

Hadith 8

وَ عَنْهُ عَنِ اَلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يُوسُفَ عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ أَبِي اَلْحَسَنِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ جُمَيْعٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اَللَّهِ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ فِي حَدِيثٍ طَوِيلٍ:» اَلصِّيَامُ جُنَّةٌ مِنَ اَلنَّارِ«.

And from him, from al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Yusuf, from Muadh ibn Thabit Abu al-Hasan, from Amr ibn Jumay, from Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, who said: Imam (a.s) said: “The Messenger of Allah (swt), may Allah (swt) bless him and his family, said in a lengthy hadith: ‘Fasting is a shield from the Fire.’”

Hadith 9

وَ عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ غِيَاثِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَمِيرِ اَلْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ قَالَ:» ثَلاَثٌ يُذْهِبْنَ اَلْبَلْغَمَ وَيَزِدْنَ فِي اَلْحِفْظِ اَلسِّوَاكُ وَ اَلصَّوْمُ وَقِرَاءَةُ اَلْقُرْآنِ«.

And from him, from Muhammad ibn Ali, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ghiyath ibn Ibrahim, from Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, from his father: The Commander of the Faithful (a.s), peace be upon him, said: “Three things remove phlegm and increase memory; the tooth-stick (siwak), fasting, and recitation of the Quran.”
