Amīr al-mu’minīn warns against destitution's spiritual and intellectual harms

Ḥadīth 394

٣١٩. وَقَالَ (عليه ‏السلام) لِابْنِهِ مُحَمَّدِ ابْنِ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ: يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّى أَخَافُ عَلَيْكَ الْفَقْرَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنْهُ فَإِنَّ الْفَقْرَ مَنْقَصَةٌ لِلدِّينِ مَدْهَشَةٌ لِلْعَقْلِ دَاعِيَةٌ لِلْمَقْتِ.

319. Amīr al-mu’minīn, peace be upon him, said to his son Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah: O’ my son, I fear lest destitution overtakes you. So, you should seek Allāh’s protection from it, because destitution is deficiency of religious belief, perplexity of intelligence, and it is conducive to hatred of obstinate people.
