Amīr al-mu’minīn's humility and plea for divine forgiveness

Ḥadīth 120

١٠٠. وَقَالَ (عليه ‏السلام) وَمَدَحَهُ قَوْمٌ فِى وَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ أَعْلَمُ بِى مِنْ نَفْسِى وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ بِنَفْسِى مِنْهُمْ. اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنَا خَيْراً مِمَّا يَظُنُّونَ وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا مَا لَا يَعْلَمُونَ.

100. Some people praised Amīr al-mu’minīn, peace be upon him, to his face, then he said: O My God! You know me better than myself, and I know myself better than they do. O My God! Make us better than what they think and forgive us what they do not know.
