ومن كلام له (عليه السلام) لمّا أراده الناس على البيعة بعد قتل عثمان

When people decided to swear allegiance [1] at Amīr al-mu’minīn’s hand after the murder of ‘Uthmān, he said:

دَعُوني وَالْـتَمِسُوا غَيْرِي; فإِنَّا مُسْتَقْبِلُونَ أَمْراً لَهُ وُجُوهٌ وَأَلْوَانٌ; لاَ تَقُومُ لَهُ الْقُلُوبُ، وَلاَ تَثْبُتُ عَلَيْهِ الْعُقُولُ، وَإِنَّ الاْفَاقَ قَدْ أَغَامَتْ، وَالْـمَحَجَّةَ قَدْ تَنَكَّرَتْ. وَاعْلَمُوا أَنِّي إنْ أَجَبْتُكُمْ رَكِبْتُ بِكُمْ مَا أَعْلَمُ، وَلَمْ أُصْغِ إِلَى قَوْلِ الْقَائِلِ وَعَتْبِ الْعَاتِبِ، وَإِنْ تَرَكْتُمُونِي فَأَنَا كَأَحَدِكُمْ; وَلَعَلِّي أَسْمَعُكُمْ وَأَطْوَعُكُمْ لِمنْ وَلَّيْتُمُوهُ أَمْرَكُمْ، وَأَنَا لَكُمْ وَزِيراً، خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ مِنِّي أَمِيراً!

Leave me and seek some one else. We are facing a matter which has (several) faces and colours, which neither hearts can stand nor intelligence can accept. Clouds are hovering over the sky, and faces are not discernable. You should know that if I respond to you I would lead you as I know and would not care about whatever one may say or abuse. If you leave me then I am the same as you are. It is possible I would listen to and obey whomever you make incharge of your affairs. I am better for you as a counsellor than as a chief.

Extrait de ses paroles lorsque le peuple réclamait son commandement après la mort de ‘Outhman

Laissez-moi et cherchez un autre. Nous allons nous trouver face à une situation qui aura plusieurs visages et différentes nuances, situation qui ne réjouira pas les cœurs et qui troublera les esprits. Les horizons sont sombres et le grand chemin a perdu son tracé. Sachez que si j’accède à votre désir, je vous traiterai à ma façon, je n’écouterai pas ce qu’on pourrait dire, ni tiendrai compte d’aucune récrimi- nation. Mais si vous me dispensez de cette charge, je serai comme tout un chacun et il se pourrait que je sois alors le plus attentif et le plus obéissant à celui que vous auriez choisi. Il vaut mieux pour vous que je vous serve comme ministre plutôt que d’être votre émir.
