1ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ جَمِيعاً عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا (عَلَيْهِما الْسَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي فِي قَمِيصٍ وَاحِدٍ أَوْ فِي قَبَاءٍ طَاقٍ أَوْ فِي قَبَاءٍ مَحْشُوٍّ وَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ فَقَالَ إِذَا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ قَمِيصٌ سَفِيقٌ أَوْ قَبَاءٌ لَيْسَ بِطَوِيلِ الْفُرَجِ فَلاَ بَأْسَ بِهِ وَالثَّوْبُ الْوَاحِدُ يُتَوَشَّحُ بِهِ وَسَرَاوِيلُ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لاَ بَأْسَ بِهِ وَقَالَ إِذَا لَبِسَ السَّرَاوِيلَ فَلْيَجْعَلْ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ شَيْئاً وَلَوْ حَبْلاً.
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from af-Fadf ibn Shadhan all from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked one of the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about a man who performs Salah (prayer) in one shirt or a gown of a single layer or stuffed (of several layers), one without a loincloth. He (the Imam) said, ‘If one is wearing a shirt which is of a densely woven fabric or a gown which does not have a long opening (on its sides), then it is not an offense to use them in Salah (prayer). Or if it is one piece of fabric which is placed on the right shoulder and then one end sent under the left arm and turned back over the shoulder and so on or a pant (pajama) in which case one is to secure it with something like even a piece of rope to one’s shoulders.’”
2ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) صَلَّى فِي إِزَارٍ وَاحِدٍ لَيْسَ بِوَاسِعٍ قَدْ عَقَدَهُ عَلَى عُنُقِهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ مَا تَرَى لِلرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي فِي قَمِيصٍ وَاحِدٍ فَقَالَ إِذَا كَانَ كَثِيفاً فَلاَ بَأْسَ بِهِ وَالْمَرْأَةُ تُصَلِّي فِي الدِّرْعِ وَالْمِقْنَعَةِ إِذَا كَانَ الدِّرْعُ كَثِيفاً يَعْنِي إِذَا كَانَ سَتِيراً قُلْتُ رَحِمَكَ الله الأمَةُ تُغَطِّي رَأْسَهَا إِذَا صَلَّتْ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَى الأمَةِ قِنَاعٌ.
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from fro al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once saw abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, perform Salah (prayer) wearing a loincloth, not very large, secured to his neck by a knot. I then asked him (the Imam) about a man who performs Salah (prayer) in one shirt. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not an offense if it is woven densely, and a woman performs Salah (prayer) in a loose outer garment and veil, if the outer garment is densely woven, that is, provides covering.’ I then asked saying, ‘Allah has granted you blessings, is a slave-girl to cover her head in Salah (prayer)? He (the Imam) said, ‘A slave girl is not required to have a veil.’”
3ـ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) عَنْ رَجُلٍ أَمَّ قَوْماً فِي قَمِيصٍ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ فَقَالَ لاَ يَنْبَغِي إِلاَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ أَوْ عِمَامَةٌ يَرْتَدِي بِهَا.
3. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amir Ali ibn Mahziyar from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from Hisham ibn Salim from Sulayman ibn Khalid who has said the following: I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a man who leads a people in Salah (prayer) wearing a shirt without a gown. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not proper for him to perform Salah (prayer) without a gown or turban to dress up with.’”
4ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِيَّاكَ وَالْتِحَافَ الصَّمَّاءِ قُلْتُ وَمَا الْتِحَافُ الصَّمَّاءِ قَالَ أَنْ تُدْخِلَ الثَّوْبَ مِنْ تَحْتِ جَنَاحِكَ فَتَجْعَلَهُ عَلَى مَنْكِبٍ وَاحِدٍ.
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Never use Iltihaf al-Samma’. I then asked, ‘What is Iltihaf al-Samma’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is to insert clothes under your arms and secure them on one shoulder (as if placing yourself in a bag).”’
5ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ رَفَعَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) فِي رَجُلٍ يُصَلِّي فِي سَرَاوِيلَ لَيْسَ مَعَهُ غَيْرُهُ قَالَ يَجْعَلُ التِّكَّةَ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ.
5. Ali ibn Muhammad in a marfu‘ manner has narrated the following: “About a man who performs Salah (prayer) wearing a pant (pajama) with no other clothes, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘He is to secure it with a drawstring to his shoulder.’”
6ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَدِيدٍ عَنْ جَمِيلٍ قَالَ سَأَلَ مُرَازِمٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) وَأَنَا مَعَهُ حَاضِرٌ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ الْحَاضِرِ يُصَلِّي فِي إِزَارٍ مُرْتَدِياً بِهِ قَالَ يَجْعَلُ عَلَى رَقَبَتِهِ مِنْدِيلاً أَوْ عِمَامَةً يَتَرَدَّى بِهِ.
6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ali ibn Hadid from Jamil who has said the following: “Murazim once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when I was present, about a man who performs Salah (prayer) when at home, wearing a loincloth. He (the Imam) said, ‘He is to secure it with a handkerchief or turban to his neck when wearing.’”
7ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ لاَ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ تَتَوَشَّحَ بِإِزَارٍ فَوْقَ الْقَمِيصِ وَأَنْتَ تُصَلِّي وَلاَ تَتَّزِرْ بِإِزَارٍ فَوْقَ الْقَمِيصِ إِذَا أَنْتَ صَلَّيْتَ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ زِيِّ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ.
7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Hisham ibn Salim from abu Basir from who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not proper to throw a loincloth over a shirt when performing Salah (prayer) or use a loincloth on a shirt when performing Salah (prayer); it is of the manner of dressing in the pre-Islamic age of darkness.”’
8ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ رِئَابٍ عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ سُوقَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ لاَ بَأْسَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ وَإِزَارُهُ مُحَلَّلَةٌ إِنَّ دِينَ مُحَمَّدٍ (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) حَنِيفٌ.
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from ibn Mahbub from ibn Ri’ab from Ziyad ibn Suqah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not an offense if one of you perform Salah (prayer) in one piece of cloth and his loincloth is not secured; religion of Muhammad, O Allah grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, is upright.’”
9ـ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ رِفَاعَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَنْ سَمِعَ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ مُتَّزِراً بِهِ قَالَ لاَ بَأْسَ بِهِ إِذَا رَفَعَهُ إِلَى الثُّنْدُوَتَيْنِ.
9. Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from Rifa‘ah who has said the following: “The person who had heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, narrated to me about a man who performs Salah (prayer) in one piece of cloth using it as a loincloth. He (the Imam) said, ‘There is no offense in it if he raises it up to his chest.’”
10ـ وَعَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مُصَدِّقِ بْنِ صَدَقَةَ عَنْ عَمَّارٍ السَّابَاطِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) فِي الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي فَيُدْخِلُ يَدَيْهِ تَحْتَ ثَوْبِهِ قَالَ إِذَا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبٌ آخَرُ إِزَارٌ أَوْ سَرَاوِيلُ فَلاَ بَأْسَ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَلاَ يَجُوزُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ وَإِنْ أَدْخَلَ يَداً وَاحِدَةً وَلَمْ يُدْخِلِ الأخْرَى فَلاَ بَأْسَ.
10. It is a narration from him (narrator of previous Hadith) by Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali from ‘Amr ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah ‘Ammar al-Sabatiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a man who when performing Salah (prayer) enters his hands under his clothes. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not an offense if he has other clothes on him, like a loincloth or pant (pajama); otherwise, it is not permissible, however, entering one hand is not harmful.’”
11ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ مُسْكَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) تُصَلِّي الْمَرْأَةُ فِي ثَلاَثَةِ أَثْوَابٍ إِزَارٍ وَدِرْعٍ وَخِمَارٍ وَلاَ يَضُرُّهَا بِأَنْ تُقَنِّعَ بِالْخِمَارِ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدْ فَثَوْبَيْنِ تَتَّزِرُ بِأَحَدِهِمَا وَتُقَنِّعُ بِالآخَرِ قُلْتُ فَإِنْ كَانَ دِرْعٌ وَمِلْحَفَةٌ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهَا مِقْنَعَةٌ فَقَالَ لاَ بَأْسَ إِذَا تَقَنَّعَتْ بِالْمِلْحَفَةِ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكْفِهَا فَلْتَلْبَسْهَا طُولاً.
11. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from ibn Muskan from ibn abu Ya‘fur who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Women perform Salah (prayer) in three pieces of clothes: Loincloth, an outer garment with sleeves, and a yashmak. It is not harmful if she uses the Yashmak as a veil and if she does not find, she can use two pieces of clothes using one as loincloth and the other as a veil.’ I (the narrator) then asked, ‘Can she use an outer garment and a sheet without a head scarf?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not an offense if she uses the sheet as a head scarf and if it is not enough, she can wear it lengthwise.’”
12ـ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ لاَ بَأْسَ بِأَنْ يُصَلِّيَ الرَّجُلُ وَثَوْبُهُ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ وَمَنْكِبَيْهِ فَيُسْبِلُهُ إِلَى الأرْضِ وَلاَ يَلْتَحِفُ بِهِ وَأَخْبَرَنِي مَنْ رَآهُ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ.
12. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amir from Ali ibn Mahziyar from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Shu’ayb from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not an offense if a man performs Salah (prayer) with his clothes on his back and shoulder to allow them to hang downward to the ground and he does not use it as a bed-sheet, as I am told it is done so.’”
13ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَشْتَمِلُ فِي صَلاَةٍ بِثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ قَالَ لاَ يَشْتَمِلُ بِثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ فَأَمَّا أَنْ يَتَوَشَّحَ فَيُغَطِّيَ مَنْكِبَيْهِ فَلاَ بَأْسَ.
13. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a man who wraps himself up in one piece of cloth. He (the Imam) said, ‘He does not wrap himself up in one piece of cloth, but if he uses it as an outer garment that covers his shoulders, it is not harmful.’”
14ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنِ الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ لاَ يَصْلُحُ لِلْمَرْأَةِ الْمُسْلِمَةِ أَنْ تَلْبَسَ مِنَ الْخُمُرِ وَالدُّرُوعِ مَا لاَ يُوَارِي شَيْئاً.
14. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not proper for a Muslim woman to wear of the veils and outer garment the kind that does not provide any covering.’”
15ـ جَمَاعَةٌ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ زُرْعَةَ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ يَكُونُ فِي فَلاَةٍ مِنَ الأرْضِ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ إِلاَّ ثَوْبٌ وَاحِدٌ وَأَجْنَبَ فِيهِ وَلَيْسَ عِنْدَهُ مَاءٌ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ قَالَ يَتَيَمَّمُ وَيُصَلِّي عُرْيَاناً قَاعِداً يُومِىُ إِيمَاءً.
15. A group has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from his brother Zur’ah from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a man who is in wilderness and has no other clothes except one piece and has experienced sexual relation in it. He does not have water. What must he do? He (the Imam) said, ‘He takes Tayammum and performs Salah (prayer) in a sitting position and makes gestures.’”
16ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) رَجُلٌ خَرَجَ مِنْ سَفِينَةٍ عُرْيَاناً أَوْ سُلِبَ ثِيَابُهُ وَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئاً يُصَلِّي فِيهِ فَقَالَ يُصَلِّي إِيمَاءً فَإِنْ كَانَتِ امْرَأَةً جَعَلَتْ يَدَهَا عَلَى فَرْجِهَا وَإِنْ كَانَ رَجُلاً وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى سَوْأَتِهِ ثُمَّ يَجْلِسَانِ فَيُومِئَانِ إِيمَاءً وَلاَ يَسْجُدَانِ وَلاَ يَرْكَعَانِ فَيَبْدُو مَا خَلْفَهُمَا تَكُونُ صَلاَتُهُمَا إِيمَاءً بِرُءُوسِهِمَا قَالَ وَإِنْ كَانَا فِي مَاءٍ أَوْ بَحْرٍ لُجِّيٍّ لَمْ يَسْجُدَا عَلَيْهِ وَمَوْضُوعٌ عَنْهُمَا التَّوَجُّهُ فِيهِ يُومِئَانِ فِي ذَلِكَ إِيمَاءً رَفْعُهُمَا تَوَجُّهٌ وَوَضْعُهُمَا.
16. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad from Hariz from Zurarah who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a man who sails in a boat while naked or his clothes are looted and does not find anything to perform Salah (prayer) with. He (the Imam) said, ‘He performs Salah (prayer) by making gestures and a woman in such condition places her hand over her vagina, and if a man, he places his hand over his private part. They sit and make gestures and do not perform Sajdah (prostration) or Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees) so their back is exposed. Their Salah (prayer) is by gestures by their heads.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If they are in water or sea with waves they do not perform Sajdah (prostration) and they are exempt from facing (the direction of al- Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah)). They make gestures: their rising and lowering is gestures.’”
