The Quantity of Water Required for Wudu’, Showers and One Who Is Excessive in the Use of Water for Wudu’
9 Aḥadīth
Ḥadīth 1

1ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ يَأْخُذُ أَحَدُكُمُ الرَّاحَةَ مِنَ الدُّهْنِ فَيَمْلأُ بِهَا جَسَدَهُ وَالْمَاءُ أَوْسَعُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ.

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yunus from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘One of you in order to rub oil on his body covers his whole body with an amount of oil on his palm. Water, however, is more plentiful than this.”

Ḥadīth 2

2ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ وَمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ إِنَّمَا الْوُضُوءُ حَدٌّ مِنْ حُدُودِ الله لِيَعْلَمَ الله مَنْ يُطِيعُهُ وَمَنْ يَعْصِيهِ وَإِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لاَ يُنَجِّسُهُ شَيْ‏ءٌ إِنَّمَا يَكْفِيهِ مِثْلُ الدَّهْنِ.

2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Hammad from Hariz from Zurarah and Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘Wudu’ is one of the boundaries Allah has established so that He finds out who obeys or disobeys Him. The believing people do not allow it (their body) to remain unclean. It is sufficient to use a small amount of water like rubbing oil on one’s body.’”

Ḥadīth 3

3ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ جَمِيعاً عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) يَقُولُ إِنَّ أَبِي كَانَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ لِلْوُضُوءِ حَدّاً مَنْ تَعَدَّاهُ لَمْ يُؤْجَرْ وَكَانَ أَبِي يَقُولُ إِنَّمَا يَتَلَدَّدُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ وَمَا حَدُّهُ قَالَ تَغْسِلُ وَجْهَكَ وَيَدَيْكَ وَتَمْسَحُ رَأْسَكَ وَرِجْلَيْكَ.

3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad and abu Dawud all from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Fadalah ibn Dawud ibn Farqad who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), say, ‘My father would say, “Wudu 5 has certain limits. If one trespasses such limits, he will not receive any reward.” My father would also say, “(Certain people) only make it perplexed.’” A man then asked, ‘What then are the limits of Wudu’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Wash your face and hands and wipe your head and feet.’”

Ḥadīth 4

4ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ جَمِيلٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ الْجُنُبُ مَا جَرَى عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءُ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ قَلِيلُهُ وَكَثِيرُهُ فَقَدْ أَجْزَأَهُ.

4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Jamil from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘In taking a Ghusl (bath) because of sexual relations it is sufficient to allow water flow, a small or plenty of water over one’s body. This is sufficient for such Ghusl (bath).”’

Ḥadīth 5

5ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا (عَلَيْهِما الْسَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ غُسْلِ الْجَنَابَةِ كَمْ يُجْزِئُ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ الله (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) يَغْتَسِلُ بِخَمْسَةِ أَمْدَادٍ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ صَاحِبَتِهِ وَيَغْتَسِلاَنِ جَمِيعاً مِنْ إِنَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ.

5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, from Safwan, from ‘Ala’ ibn Razin, from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah or abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about how much water is needed for Ghusl (bath) because of sexual relations. He (the Imam) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah would use five handfuls of water, share it with his partner, and both of them would take Ghusl (bath) from the same water container.’”

Ḥadīth 6

6ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ حَمْزَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ يُجْزِئُكَ مِنَ الْغُسْلِ وَالاسْتِنْجَاءِ مَا مُلِئَتْ يَمِينُكَ.

6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Yazid ibn Ishaq from Harun ibn Hamzah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘An amount of water which can fill up your right hand is sufficient for your Ghusl (bath) and washing clean your urethra.’”

Ḥadīth 7

7ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ جَمِيلٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) فِي الْوُضُوءِ قَالَ إِذَا مَسَّ جِلْدَكَ الْمَاءُ فَحَسْبُكَ.

7. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Fadalah ibn Ayyub from Jamil from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘It is sufficient for Wudu’ to allow water to touch your skin (of the parts to be washed for Wudu’).”’

Ḥadīth 8

8ـ عَلِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ يُجْنِبُ فَيَرْتَمِسُ فِي الْمَاءِ ارْتِمَاسَةً وَاحِدَةً فَيَخْرُجُ يُجْزِئُهُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ غُسْلِهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ.

8. Ali has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who after sexual relations immerses his whole body in water at once and comes out. ‘Is this sufficient for Ghusl (bath)?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, it is sufficient.’”

Ḥadīth 9

9ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ وَغَيْرُهُ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَمُّونٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ إِنَّ لله مَلَكاً يَكْتُبُ سَرَفَ الْوَضُوءِ كَمَا يَكْتُبُ عُدْوَانَهُ.

9. Ali ibn Muhammad and others have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Shammun from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah has an angel who writes down one’s acting excessively or transgressing limits.’”
