Thawāb al-Aʿmāl wa ʿiqāb al-Aʿmāl

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِیسَی عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع الْعِزُّ رِدَاءُ اللَّهِ وَ الْکِبْرِیَاءُ إِزَارُهُ فَمَنْ تَنَاوَلَ شَیْئاً مِنْهُ أَکَبَّهُ اللَّهُ فِی جَهَنَّمَ.

1. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) narrates that Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) said, “Honor is the dress of God (suitable only for Allah) and pride is the dress of those who run to get honor and they are hung in Hell by Allah.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِیٍّ مَاجِیلَوَیْهِ عَنْ عَمِّهِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِی الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ الْکُوفِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی جَمِیلَهَ الْمُرَادِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: الْکِبْرِیَاءُ رِدَاءُ اللَّهِ فَمَنْ نَازَعَهُ شَیْئاً مِنْ ذَلِکَ کَبَّهُ اللَّهُ فِی النَّارِ.

2. It was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Ali Majluwayh from his uncle Muhammad b. Abi al-Qasim from Muhammad b. Ali al-Kufi from Abi Jameela al-Muradi from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “Pride is a divine dress (suitable only for Allah) and those who compete in this matter will be hung in Hell by Allah.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَی بْنِ الْمُتَوَکِّلِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَلِیُّ بْنُ الْحُسَیْنِ السَّعْدَآبَادِیُّ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ عَنْ سَعِیدِ بْنِ جَنَاحٍ عَنْ حُسَیْنِ بْنِ مُخْتَارٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: ثَلَاثَهٌ لَا یَنْظُرُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِلَیْهِمْ الثَّانِی عِطْفَهُ وَ الْمُسْبِلُ إِزَارَهُ خُیَلَاءَ وَ الْمُنَفِّقُ سِلْعَتَهُ بِالْأَیْمَانِ إِنَّ الْکِبْرِیَاءَ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِینَ.

3. It was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakil who said it was narrated to me by Ali b. al-Hussain al-Sa’dabadi from Ahmad b. Abi Abdillah from Mansur b. al-Abbas from Sa’eed b. Janah from Hussain b. Mukhtar from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “The Almighty Allah will not have mercy on three types of people – the proud, one whose dress of pride sweeps the ground and one who swears in order to sell things. Surely pride is only for the Lord of the Worlds.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ عُرْوَهَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُکَیْرٍ عَنْ زُرَارَهَ بْنِ أَعْیَنَ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ وَ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: لَا یَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّهَ مَنْ فِی قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّهٍ مِنْ کِبْرٍ.

4. And from the previous chain from Ahmad b. Abi Abdillah from his father from al-Qasim b. ’Urwa from Abdillah b. Bukayr from Zurarah b. A’yan from Abi Ja’far and Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “A person who has even an iota of pride in his heart will not enter Paradise.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ الْکُوفِیِّ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ طَلْحَهَ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: لَا یَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّهَ عَبْدٌ فِی قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّهٍ مِنْ خَرْدَلٍ مِنْ کِبْرٍ وَ لَا یَدْخُلُ النَّارَ عَبْدٌ فِی قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ حَبَّهٍ مِنْ خَرْدَلٍ* مِنْ إِیمَانٍ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاکَ إِنَ الرَّجُلَ لَیَلْبَسُ الثَّوْبَ وَ یَرْکَبُ الدَّابَّهَ فَیَکَادُ یَعْرِفُ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ الْکِبْرَ قَالَ لَیْسَ ذَلِکَ بِکِبْرٍ إِنَّمَا الْکِبْرُ إِنْکَارُ الْحَقِّ وَ الْإِیمَانُ إِقْرَارٌ بِالْحَقِّ.

5. And from the previous chain from Ahmad b. Abi Abdillah from Muhammad b. Ali al-Kufi from Ali b. al-Nu’man from Abdillah b. Talha from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “A person who has pride in his heart equal to even a small grain will not enter Paradise and a person who has faith in his heart equal to even a small grain will not enter Hell.” The narrator asked, “When a person wears good clothes and rides a mount, he feels proud.” Imam (a.s.) replied, “This is not pride. Pride means to reject the truth and faith means to accept it.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ الْکُوفِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی جَمِیلَهَ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ طَرِیفٍ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ: الْکِبْرُ مَطَایَا النَّارِ.

6. And from the previous chain from Muhammad b. Ali al-Kufi from Abi Jameela from Sa’d b. Tareef from Abi Ja’far (a.s.) who said: “Pride is a vehicle of Hell.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارُ عَنْ یَعْقُوبَ بْنِ یَزِیدَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِی عُمَیْرٍ عَنْ أَبِی بَکْرٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: إِنَّ فِی جَهَنَّمَ لواد [لَوَادِیاً] لِلْمُتَکَبِّرِینَ یُقَالُ لَهُ سَقَرُ شَکَا إِلَی اللَّهِ شِدَّهَ حَرِّهِ وَ سَأَلَهُ أَنْ یَأْذَنَ لَهُ أَنْ یَتَنَفَّسَ فَأَحْرَقَ جَهَنَّمَ.

7. It was narrated to me by Muhammad b. al-Hassan who said it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. al-Hassan al-Saffar from Ya’qub b. Yazid from Muhammad b. Abi ’Umayr from Abi Bakr from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “A valley of Hell called Saqar, is reserved for the proud. This valley was burnt excessively by Allah and it requested Allah to let it inhale. As soon as it was allowed to do so, the entire Hell flared up.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص یُحْشَرُ الْمُتَکَبِّرُونَ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَهِ فِی خَلْقِ الذَّرِّ فِی صُورَهِ النَّاسِ یُوطَئُونَ حَتَّی یَفْرُغَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنْ حِسَابِ خَلْقِهِ ثُمَّ یُسْلَکُ بِهِمْ یُوطَئُونَ نَاراً لا بنار یُسْقَوْنَ مِنْ طِینَهِ الْخَبَالِ مِنْ عُصَارَهِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ.

8. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “The proud will be gathered on the Day of Judgment with their bodies as diminutive as that of ants. People will tease them till Allah concludes accounting of all the people. Then Allah will put them into Hell where they will be made to drink the dirt coming out of the private parts of a fornicateress and dirty blood and puss of the people of Hell.”

وَ بِإِسْنَادِهِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص أَکْثَرُ أَهْلِ جَهَنَّمَ الْمُتَکَبِّرُونَ.

9. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “The majority of the people of Hell will be those who are proud.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ عَنْ أَخِیهِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع یَقُولُ إِنَّ الْمُتَکَبِّرِینَ یُجْعَلُونَ فِی صُورَهِ الذَّرِّ یَتَوَطَّأُ بِهِمُ النَّاسُ حَتَّی یَفْرُغَ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْحِسَابِ.

10. It is narrated that Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) said, “Surely proud people will be reduced to the size of small ants on the Day of Judgment and people will ridicule them till Allah concludes accounting of all the people.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ الْکُوفِیِّ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ جُمَیْعٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: الْجَبَّارُونَ أَبْعَدُ النَّاسِ مِنَ اللَّهِ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَهِ.

11. And from the previous chain from Ahmad b. Abi Abdillah from Muhammad b. Ali al-Kufi from ’Amru b. Jamee’ from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “Proud people will be farthest from Allah on the Day of Judgment.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَمِیدِ الْعَطَّارِ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ جَمِیلٍ عَنْ أَبِی حَمْزَهَ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص ثَلَاثَهٌ لا یُکَلِّمُهُمُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَهِ وَ لا یَنْظُرُ إِلَیْهِمْ ... وَ لا یُزَکِّیهِمْ وَ لَهُمْ عَذابٌ أَلِیمٌ شَیْخٌ زَانٍ وَ مَلِکٌ جَبَّارٌ وَ مُقِلٌّ مُخْتَالٌ.

12. Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) narrates that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “Allah will not talk to three types of people on the Day of Judgment and neither will He send mercy upon them. They will not be consoled and shall get severe punishment. Those three are – an aged fornicator, a despotic ruler and person who is proud.”
