Thawāb al-Aʿmāl wa ʿiqāb al-Aʿmāl

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَیْنِ بْنِ أَبِی الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ عَوْنٍ الْقَلَانِسِیِّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِی یَعْفُورٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: مَنْ لَقِیَ الْمُسْلِمِینَ بِوَجْهَیْنِ وَ لِسَانَیْنِ جَاءَ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَهِ وَ لَهُ لِسَانٌ مِنْ نَارٍ.

1. My father (rah) said: it was narrated to me by Sa’d b. Abdillah from Muhammad b. al-Hussain b. Abi al-Khattab from Muhammad b. Sinan from ’Awn al-Qalanisi from Ibn Abi Ya’fur from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “One who double-talks with other Muslims, will have two tongues when he comes on the Day of Judgment.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارُ عَنِ الْمُنَبِّهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحُسَیْنِ عَنْ عُلْوَانَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ زَیْدِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ عَنْ آبَائِهِ ع قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص یَجِی ءُ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَهِ ذُو الْوَجْهَیْنِ دَالِعاً لِسَانُهُ فِی قَفَاهُ وَ آخَرُ مِنْ قُدَّامِهِ یتلهبا [یَتَلَهَّبَانِ] نَاراً حَتَّی یَلْهَبَا جَسَدَهُ ثُمَّ یُقَالُ لَهُ هَذَا الَّذِی کَانَ فِی الدُّنْیَا ذَا وَجْهَیْنِ وَ لِسَانَیْنِ یُعْرَفُ بِذَلِکَ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَهِ.

2. Zaid bin Ali (a.s.) narrates from Amirul Momineen (a.s.) who in turn narrates that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “One who double-talks will arrive on the Day of Judgment having one of his tongue in front and another behind. Both will be engulfed in flames. Then his whole body will get engulfed in flames. People will say that this is the same one who used to double-talk.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِیسَی عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُسْکَانَ عَنْ أَبِی شَیْبَهَ الزُّهْرِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ: بِئْسَ الْعَبْدُ عبدا [عَبْدٌ] یَکُونُ ذَا وَجْهَیْنِ وَ ذَا لِسَانَیْنِ یُطْرِی أَخَاهُ شَاهِداً وَ یَأْکُلُهُ غَائِباً إِنْ أُعْطِیَ حَسَدَهُ وَ إِنِ ابْتُلِیَ خَذَلَهُ.

3. My father (rah) said: it was narrated to me by Sa’d b. Abdillah from Ahmad b. Muhammad from Uthman b. Isa from Abdillah b. Muskan from Abi Shaybah al-Zuhri from Abi Ja’far (a.s.) who said: “A person who double-talks and is double-faced is doing very badly indeed. He does not get tired of praising his brother on his face but always backbites him. He becomes jealous when his brother gets some bounty and does not help him when he is in trouble.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُسْکَانَ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ عَنْ أَبِی شَیْبَهَ الزُّهْرِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ: بِئْسَ الْعَبْدُ عبدا [عَبْدٌ] هُمَزَهٌ لُمَزَهٌ یُقْبِلُ بِوَجْهِهِ وَ یُدْبِرُ بِآخَرَ.

4. And from the previous chain from Abdillah b. Muskan from Dawud b. Farqad from Abi Shaybah al-Zuhri from Abi Ja’far (a.s.) who said: “A person who talks bad about each and every small thing is a sinner. He faces people with a face and has another on their back.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَی بْنِ الْمُتَوَکِّلِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَلِیُّ بْنُ الْحُسَیْنِ السَّعْدَآبَادِیُّ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عِدَّهٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِی حَمَّادٍ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ: قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لِعِیسَی ابْنِ مَرْیَمَ ع یَا عِیسَی لِیَکُنْ لِسَانُکَ فِی السِّرِّ وَ الْعَلَانِیَهِ لِسَاناً وَاحِداً وَ کَذَلِکَ قَلْبُکَ احْذَرْ نَفْسَکَ وَ کَفَی بِی خَبِیراً لَا یَصْلُحُ لِسَانَانِ فِی فَمٍ وَاحِدٍ وَ لَا سَیْفَانِ فِی غِمْدٍ وَاحِدٍ وَ لَا قَلْبَانِ فِی صَدْرٍ وَاحِدٍ وَ کَذَلِکَ الْأَذْهَانُ.

5. It was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakil who said it was narrated to me by Ali b. al-Hussain al-Sa’dabadi from Ahmad b. Abi Abdillah who said it was narrated to me by a number of our companions from Ali b. Asbat from Abdulrahman b. Abi Hamad who raised it to who said: The Almighty Allah told Prophet Isa (a.s.), “O Isa! Your heart and tongue should be united. I would like to make you aware that there can be no two tongues in one mouth much in the same way as two swords cannot be kept in a single sheath. Similarly two hearts cannot be present in one chest. Same is the case with mind and memory.”
