Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah, from al-Sayyari, from Muhammad ibn Jumhur, from some of our companions, from Abu Abd Allah (a), who said:
Indeed, Fatimah daughter of Asad, the mother of the Commander of the Faithful, was the first woman to migrate on foot to the Messenger of God (s) from Mecca to Medina. She was among the people most devoted and most kind toward the Messenger of God (s).
She heard the Messenger of God (s) saying, ‘People will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection naked, just as they were born.’ So she said, ‘Oh, what shame!’ He said to her, ‘Then I ask God to raise you clothed.’
And she heard him mention the pressure of the grave, so she said, ‘Oh, my weakness!’ He said to her, ‘Then I ask God to spare you from that.’
One day she said to the Messenger of God (s), ‘I wish to free this servant girl of mine.’ He said to her, ‘If you do so, God will free, in exchange for every limb of hers, one of your limbs from the Fire.’
Then when she fell ill, she left her final instructions with the Messenger of God (s), and ordered that her servant be freed. Her tongue became unable to speak, so she began signaling toward the Messenger of God (s) by gesture, and the Messenger of God (s) accepted her will.
Then one day, while he was sitting, the Commander of the Faithful (a) came to him weeping. The Messenger of God (s) said to him, ‘What makes you weep?’ He said, ‘My mother Fatimah has died.’ The Messenger of God (s) said, ‘And by God, she was my mother as well.’
Then he rose quickly until he entered, looked at her, and wept. Then he ordered the women to wash her, and said, ‘When you have finished, do not do anything further until you inform me.’
So when they had finished, they informed him of that. He gave them one of his shirts, the one next to his body, and ordered them to shroud her in it. And he said to the Muslims, ‘If you see me doing something that I have not done before, then ask me why I did it.’
Then when they had finished washing her and shrouding her, he entered and carried her bier upon his shoulder, and he remained beneath her bier until he brought her to her grave. Then he placed her down and entered the grave and lay down in it. Then he took her in his hands until he placed her in the grave. Then he bent over her for a long time, speaking to her privately and saying to her, ‘Your son, your son, your son.’
Then he came out and leveled the earth over her. Then he bent over her grave, and they heard him saying, ‘There is no god but God. O God, I entrust her to You.’ Then he left.
So the Muslims said to him, ‘We saw you do things today that you had never done before.’ He said, ‘Today I lost the devotion of Abu Talib’s household. Whenever she had something, she would give me preference in it over herself and over her children.
And I had mentioned the Resurrection, and that people would be gathered naked, and she said, “Oh, what shame!” So I assured her that God would raise her clothed.
And I mentioned the pressure of the grave, and she said, “Oh, my weakness!” So I assured her that God would spare her that. So I shrouded her in my shirt, and I lay down in her grave for that reason.
And I bent over her and instructed her in what she would be asked about. She was asked about her Lord, and she answered. She was asked about her Messenger, and she answered. She was asked about her guardian and her leader, and she became shaken, so I said, “Your son, your son, your son.”’
