Book 1, Chapter 209

About the words of Allah ‘you cannot achieve any goodness…’ (3:92)
1 Ḥadīth

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ ظَبْيَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (عليه السلام) لَنْ تَنالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّى تُنْفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ هَكَذَا فَاقْرَأْهَا.


209. From him, from his father, from Umar Bin Abdul Aziz, from Yunus Bin Zibyaan, who has narrated the following: Abu Abdullah (a.s) (regarding the Verse) “[3:92] By no means shall you attain to righteousness until you spend (benevolently) out of all you love”. This is how he (a.s) read it’ (reading ‘مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ هَكَذَا فَاقْرَأْهَا’ instead of what is now in the Holy Quran ‘وَمَا تُنْفِقُوا مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ بِهِ عَلِيمٌ’).
