الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَقَرَّبَتْ إِلَيْهِ كِسَراً فَقَالَ هَلْ عِنْدَكِ إِدَامٌ فَقَالَتْ لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا عِنْدِي إِلَّا خَلٌّ فَقَالَ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) نِعْمَ الْإِدَامُ الْخَلُّ مَا أَقْفَرَ بَيْتٌ فِيهِ الْخَلُّ .
1. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once the Messenger of Allah went to the house of ‘Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, and she brought pieces of bread. He (the Messenger of Allah) asked, ‘Do you have any sauce?’ She replied, ‘No, O Messenger of Allah except vinegar.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Yes, vinegar is the best sauce; a house which has vinegar does not become poor.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْخَلُّ يَشُدُّ الْعَقْلَ .
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim from Sulayman ibn Khalid who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Vinegar strengthens the power of understanding.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ مَا أَقْفَرَ بَيْتٌ فِيهِ خَلٌّ وَ قَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) ذَلِكَ .
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Ali ibn abu Hamzah who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘A house in which there is vinegar does not become needy, and the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has already said it.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْهَمَذَانِيِّ أَنَّ رَجُلًا كَانَ عِنْدَ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) بِخُرَاسَانَ فَقُدِّمَتْ إِلَيْهِ مَائِدَةٌ عَلَيْهَا خَلٌّ وَ مِلْحٌ فَافْتَتَحَ ( عليه السلام ) بِالْخَلِّ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَمَرْتَنَا أَنْ نَفْتَتِحَ بِالْمِلْحِ فَقَالَ هَذَا مِثْلُ هَذَا يَعْنِي الْخَلَّ وَ إِنَّ الْخَلَّ يَشُدُّ الذِّهْنَ وَ يَزِيدُ فِي الْعَقْلِ .
4. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from his father from Muhammad ibn Ali al-Hamadaniy who has said the following: “A man in Khurasan once was with al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and the table-spread with food inside, vinegar and salt, was brought to him. He (the Imam) began with vinegar and the man said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, have you commanded us to begin with salt?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘This is like that’, meaning vinegar, ‘and that vinegar strengthens the mind and increases the ability to understand.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّا لَنَبْدَأُ بِالْخَلِّ عِنْدَنَا كَمَا تَبْدَءُونَ بِالْمِلْحِ عِنْدَكُمْ فَإِنَّ الْخَلَّ لَيَشُدُّ الْعَقْلَ .
5. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Aban ibn ‘Abd al-Malik from ’Isma‘il ibn Jabir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘We begin with vinegar which is with us as you begin with salt which is with you, and vinegar strengthens the ability to understand better.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ أَحَبَّ الْأَصْبَاغِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الْخَلُّ .
6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the best sauce to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, was vinegar.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَصَمِّ عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) نِعْمَ الْإِدَامُ الْخَلُّ يَكْسِرُ الْمِرَّةَ وَ يُطْفِئُ الصَّفْرَاءَ وَ يُحْيِي الْقَلْبَ .
7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from certain persons of our people from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Asamm from Shu’ayb from abu Basir who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘The best sauce is vinegar, it breaks bitterness, (bile) extinguishes yellowness (gall) and brings the heart to life.’”
عَلِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ ذُكِرَ عِنْدَهُ خَلُّ الْخَمْرِ فَقَالَ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّهُ لَيَقْتُلُ دَوَابَّ الْبَطْنِ وَ يَشُدُّ الْفَمَ .
8. Ali has narrated from his father from Hanan ibn Sadir from his father who has said the following: “Once, vinegar of wine (clean grape juice with vinegar in it placed in the sun to turn the whole thing into vinegar) was mentioned before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. He (the Imam) said, ‘It kills dawab (the insects) in the belly and strengthens the mouth (the teeth).’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ خَلُّ الْخَمْرِ يَشُدُّ اللِّثَةَ وَ يَقْتُلُ دَوَابَّ الْبَطْنِ وَ يَشُدُّ الْعَقْلَ .
9. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Vinegar of wine strengthens tooth gum, kills dawab in the belly and strengthens the ability to understand.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْجَعْفَرِيِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَحْمَدَ ابْنَيْ عُمَرَ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنْ أَبِيهِمَا رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الِاصْطِبَاغُ بِالْخَلِّ يَقْطَعُ شَهْوَةَ الزِّنَا .
10. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ibrahim al-Ja‘fariy from Muhammad and Ahmad sons of ‘Umar ibn Musa from their father in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Using vinegar as sauce cuts down the desire of fornication.’”
أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ رَبِيعٍ الْمُسْلِيِّ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ رَزِينٍ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ السِّمْطِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ قَالَ عَلَيْكَ بِخَلِّ الْخَمْرِ فَاغْمِسْ فِيهِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَبْقَى فِي جَوْفِكَ دَابَّةٌ إِلَّا قَتَلَهَا .
11. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Rabi’ al-Musliy from Ahmad ibn Razin from Sufyan al-Simt who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must eat vinegar of wine and immerse (the morsel or use it very often) in it, because it does not leave any dawab (insects) animal in your belly without killing them.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ رُشَيْدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ الدَّيْلَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ كَانُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ بِالْخَلِّ وَ يَخْتِمُونَ بِهِ وَ نَحْنُ نَسْتَفْتِحُ بِالْمِلْحِ وَ نَخْتِمُ بِالْخَلِّ .
12. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from certain persons of our people from Ali ibn Sulayman ibn Rashid from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah from Sulayman al-Daylamiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Banu Israel would begin their food with vinegar and end with it but we begin with salt and end with vinegar.’”
