Al-Amālī

1 - حدثنا الشيخ الجليل أبو جعفر محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن موسى بن بابويه القمي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا علي بن الحسين السعد آبادي، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أحمد بن محمد بن أبي نصر البزنطي، عن أبي الحسن الموصلي، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام)، قال: جاء حبر من الاحبار إلى أمير المؤمنين (1)، فقال: يا أمير المؤمنين، متى كان ربك؟ فقال له: ثكلتك أمك، ومتى لم يكن حتى يقال متى كان! كان ربي قبل القبل بلا قبل، ويكون بعد البعد بلا بعد، ولا غاية ولا منتهى لغايته، انقطعت الغايات عنه، فهو منتهى كل غاية (2).

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi narrated to us from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Abi Nasr al-Bazanti from Abi’l Hasan al-Mosuli from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as). He said: A rabbi from the rabbis came to Amir al-Mu’minin and said: O Amir al-Mu’minin! When did your Lord come into existence? So, he said to him: May your mother mourn for you! When did He not existence so that it could be said “when did He come into existence”?! My Lord existed before the beginning, without a beginning. He will exist after the ending, without an ending. He will not terminate, and there is no conclusion to His eternity. He is severed from termination, so He is the end of every end.

2 - حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن إدريس، قال: حدثنا محمد بن أحمد بن يحيى بن عمران الاشعري، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله، عن علي ابن جعفر الجوهري، عن إبراهيم بن عبد الله الكوفي، عن أبي سعيد عقيصا، قال: سئل الحسن بن علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) عن العقل، فقال: التجرع للغصة ومداهنة الاعداء (1).

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Idris narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi Ahmad b. Yahya b. `Imran al-Ash`ari narrated to us from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah from `Ali b. Ja`far al-Jawhari from Ibrahim b. `Abdillah al-Kufi from Abi Sa`id `Aqaysa. He said: Al-Hasan b. `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) was asked about intellect, so he said: It is suppressing grief and speaking gently to enemies.

3 - حدثنا علي بن أحمد بن عبد الله بن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أبيه، عن جده، عن عمر بن عثمان، عن أبي جميلة المفضل بن صالح، عن سعيد ابن طريف، عن الاصبغ بن نباتة، عن علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام)، قال: هبط جبرئيل على آدم (عليهما السلام)، فقال: يا آدم، إني أمرت أن أخبرك واحدة من ثلاث، فاختر واحدة ودع اثنتين. فقال له آدم: وما الثلاث يا جبرئيل؟ قال: العقل والحياء والدين. قال آدم: فإني قد اخترت العقل. فقال جبرئيل للحياء والدين: انصرفا ودعاه. فقالا: يا جبرئيل، إنا أمرنا أن نكون مع العقل حيث كان. قال: فشأنكما، وعرج (2).

`Ali b. Ahmad b. `Abdullah b. Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to us from his father from his grandfather from `Umar b. `Uthman from Abi Jamila al-Mufaddal b. Salih from Sa`id b. Turayf from al-Asbagh b. Nubata from `Ali b. Abi Talib (as). He said: Gabriel (as) descended upon Adam (as) and said: O Adam! I was commanded to give you the choice between one of three things. So, choose one and leave the other two. So, Adam said to him: What are the three, Gabriel? He said: Intellect, modesty, and religion. Adam said: I have chosen intellect. So, Gabriel said to modesty and religion: Go and leave him. They said: O Gabriel! Surely, we were commanded to be with the intellect wherever it goes. He said: As you wish. Then, he ascended.

4 - حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن يحيى العطار، قال: حدثنا محمد بن أحمد بن يحيى بن عمران الاشعري، عن الحسن بن علي الكوفي، عن العباس بن عامر، عن أحمد بن رزق الغمشاني، عن يحيى بن أبي العلاء، عن جابر، عن أبي جعفر الباقر (عليه السلام)، قال: إن عبدا مكث في النار سبعين خريفا، والخريف سبعون سنة. قال: ثم إنه سأل الله عز وجل: بحق محمد وأهل بيته لما رحمتني. قال: فأوحى الله جل جلاله إلى جبرئيل: أن اهبط إلى عبدي فأخرجه. قال: يا رب، وكيف لي بالهبوط في النار؟ قال: إني قد أمرتها أن تكون عليك بردا وسلاما. قال: يا رب، فما علمي بموضعه؟ فقال عز وجل: إنه في جب من سجين. قال: فهبط في النار فوجده وهو معقول على وجهه فأخرجه، فقال عز وجل: يا عبدي، كم لبثت تناشدني في النار؟ قال: ما أحصيه يا رب. قال: أما وعزتي لولا ما سألتني به لاطلت هوانك في النار، ولكنه حتمت على نفسي أن لا يسألني عبد بحق محمد وأهل بيته إلا غفرت له ما كان بيني وبينه، وقد غفرت لك اليوم (1).

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhamad b. Yahya al-`Attar narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Ahmad b. Yahya b. `Imran al-Ash`ari narrated to us from al-Hasan b. `Ali al-Kufi from al-`Abbas b. `Amer from Ahmad b. Rizq al-Ghamshani from Yahya b. Abi'l `Ala’ from Jabir from Abi Ja`far (as). He said: A worshiper will spend seventy winters in the Fire, and each winter will be equivalent to seventy years. He said: Then, he will ask Allah: “By the right of Muhammad and his Ahl al-Bayt, why did You not have mercy on me?” He said: So, Allah will reveal to Gabriel: “Descend to My worshiper and remove him.” He will say: “O Lord! How will I descend into the Fire?” He will say: “I have commanded it to be cool and peaceful for you.” He will say: “O Lord! I do not know where he is.” So, He will say: “He is in a pit in Sijjin.” He said: So, he will descend into the Fire, and find him chained up and upon his face. He will take him out. So, He will say: “O My servant! How long did you call for Me in the Fire?” He said: “I cannot comprehend it, my Lord.” He will say: “By My glory! Had you not asked, I would have prolonged your torment in the Fire. However, I have written upon Myself that no worshiper shall ask Me by the right of Muhammad and his Ahl al-Bayt except that I will forgive him for what is between him and I. So, I have forgiven you today.”

5 - حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن أبيه إبراهيم بن هاشم، قال: حدثني إبراهيم بن رجاء الجحدري، قال: حدثنا وكيع بن الجراح، عن شريك بن عبد الله، عن عبد الله بن محمد بن عقيل، عن جابر بن عبد الله الانصاري، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): من فضل أحدا من أصحابي على علي فقد كفر (2).

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from his father Ibrahim b. Hashim. He said: Ibrahim b. Raja’ al-Jahdari narrated to me. He said: Waki` b. al-Jarrah narrated to us from Sharik b. `Abdullah from `Abdullah b. Muhammad b. `Aqil from Jabir b. `Abdullah al-Ansari. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: He who prefers one of my companions over `Ali has disbelieved.

6 - حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن أبيه، عن إبراهيم بن رجاء، قال: حدثنا حماد بن زيد (3)، عن أبان، عن ابن عباس - أو عن أبان بن ثابت، عن أنس بن مالك - قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): من ناصب عليا حارب الله، ومن شك في علي فهو كافر (4).

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from his father from Ibrahim b. Raja'. He said: Hammad b. Zayd narrated to us from Aban from Ibn `Abbas, or from Aban b. Thabit from Anas b. Malik. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: He who hates `Ali has declared war on Allah. He who has doubt in `Ali has disbelieved.

7 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن الصفار، عن علي بن محمد القاساني، عن سليمان بي داود المنقري، عن يحيى بن سعيد، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق، عن أبيه (عليهما السلام)، في قول الله تبارك وتعالى: (ويستنبئونك أحق هو قل إى وربى إنه لحق) (5)، قال: يستنبئك - يا محمد - أهل مكة عن علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) إمام هو؟ (قل إى وربى إنه لحق) (6).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us from `Ali b. Muhammad al-Qasani from Sulayman b. Dawud al-Munqiri from Yahya b. Sa`id from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq from his father (as). Regarding the saying of Allah, “They ask you: ‘Is he more rightful?’ Say: ‘Yes, by my Lord, it is true.’” (10:53), he said: They – the people of Mecca – ask you – O Muhammad – about `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) – is he an Imam? “Say: ‘Yes, by my Lord, it is true.’” (10:53)

8 - حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن موسى بن القاسم البجلي، عن جعفر بن محمد بن سماعة، عن عبد الله بن مسكان، عن الحكم بن الصلت، عن أبي جعفر محمد بن علي، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): خذوا بحجزة هذا الانزع - يعني عليا - فإنه الصديق الاكبر، وهو الفاروق يفرق بين الحق والباطل، من أحبه هداه الله، ومن أبغضه أبغضه الله، ومن تخلف عنه محقه الله، ومنه سبطا أمتي الحسن والحسين، وهما ابناي، ومن الحسين أئمة الهدى، أعطاهم الله علمي وفهمي، فتولوهم ولا تتخذوا وليجة من دونهم فيحل عليكم غضب من ربكم ومن يحلل عليه غضب من ربه فقد هوى وما الحياة الدنيا إلا متاع الغرور (1).

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa narrated to us from Musa b. al-Qasim al-Bajali from Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Sama`a from `Abdullah b. Muskan from al-Hakam b. al-Salt from Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali from his forefathers (as). He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Take to the belt of this bald man (al-anza`) – meaning, `Ali – for he is the Great Saint (al-siddiq al-akbar), and he is the Distinguisher (al-faruq) who will distinguish between truth and falsehood. He who loves him is guided by Allah, he who hates him is hated by Allah, and he who opposes him is destroyed by Allah. From him are the clans of my Nation – al-Hasan and al-Husayn – and they are my sons. The Imams of Guidance are from al-Husayn. Allah has granted them my knowledge and my understanding. So, align with them, and do not take refuge with other than them, or else the wrath of your Lord will come upon you. He whose Lord’s wrath comes upon him has fallen. The life of this world is not but the enjoyment of vanity.
