Al-Amālī

1 - حدثنا الشيخ الجليل أبو جعفر محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن موسي ابن بابويه القمي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، عن الهيثم بن أبي مسروق النهدي، عن الحسن بن محبوب، عن أبي أيوب الخزاز، عن محمد بن مسلم الثقفي، قال: سئل أبو عبد الله جعفر بن محمد الصادق (عليه السلام)، عن الخمر، فقال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): إن أول ما نهاني عنه ربي عز وجل عن عبادة الاوثان، وشرب الخمر، وملاحاة الرجال، إن الله تبارك وتعالى بعثني رحمة للعالمين، ولامحق المعازف والمزامير، وأمور الجاهلية وأوثانها وأزلامها وأحداثها، أقسم ربي جل جلاله فقال: لا يشرب عبد لي خمرا في الدنيا إلا سقيته يو القيامة مثل ما شرب منها من الحميم، معذبا بعد أو مغفورا له. وقال (عليه السلام): لا تجالسوا شارب الخمر ولا تزوجوه، ولا تتزوجوا إليه، وإن مرض فلا تعودوه، وإن مات فلا تشيعوا جنازته، إن شارب الخمر يجئ يوم القيامة مسودا وجهه، مزرقة عيناه، مائلا شدقه، سائلا لعابه، دالعا لسانه من قفاه (1).

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (ra) narrated to us. He said: My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us from al-Haytham b. Abi Masruq al-Nahdi from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from Abi Ayyub al-Khazzaz from Muhammad b. Muslim al-Thaqafi. He said: Abu `Abdillah Ja`far b. Muhammad al-Sadiq (as) was asked about wine, so he said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: The first things that my Lord prohibited for me were worshiping statues, drinking wine, and quarrelling with men – surely, Allah raised me as a mercy to the worlds – and stringed instruments, wind instruments; and the affairs of Jahiliyya, its statues, its rites, and its impurities. My Lord swore, saying: “No servant of Mine will drink wine in this world except that he will be fed the same quantity in boiling water in the Resurrection, punished or forgiven.” So, he (as) said: Do not sit with one who drinks wine, do not marry him, and do not arrange for him to be married. If he becomes ill, then do not visit him. If he dies, then do not attend his funeral. Surely, a drinker of wine will come on the Day of Resurrection with a darkened face, bleary-eyed, slanted mouth, drooling, with his tongue dangling from the back of his mouth.

2 - حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا عبد الله بن جعفر الحميري، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن محمد بن حمران، عن أبي عبيدة الحذاء، قال: قال أبو جعفر (عليه السلام): يا زياد، إياك والخصومات، فإنها تورث الشك، وتحبط العمل، وتردي صاحبها، وعسى أن يتكلم الرجل بالشئ لا يغفر له. يا زياد، إنه كان فيما مضى قوم تركوا علم ما وكلوا به، وطلبوا علما كفوه، حتى انتهى بهم الكلام إلى الله عز وجل فتحيروا، فإن كان الرجل ليدعي من بين يديه فيجيب من خلفه، أو يدعى من خلفه فيجيب من بين يديه (1).

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. Ja`far al-Himyari narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa from his father from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Muhammad b. Humran from Abi `Ubayda al-Hatha’. He said: Abu Ja`far (as) said: O Ziyad! Beware of argumentation, for it creates doubt, nullifies deeds, and degrades its doer. Perhaps a man may say something that he is not forgiven for. O Ziyad! There was once a community who left the required knowledge and sought unrequired knowledge, until they spoke of Allah [and His essence] and became perplexed by it; [so much so] that if a man were to call in front of them, they would reply to the back, and to the front if called from the back.

3 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن الصفار، قال: حدثني أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، قال: حدثني أبي، عن صفوان بن يحيى، عن أبي اليسع، عن سليمان بن خالد، قال: قال أبو عبد الله (عليه السلام): إياكم والتفكر في الله، فإن التفكر في الله لا يزيد إلا تيها، إن الله عز وجل لا تدركه الابصار، ولا يوصف بمقدار (2).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to me. He said: My father narrated to me from Safwan b. Yahya from Abi’l Yasa` from Sulayman b. Khalid. He said: Abu `Abdillah (as) said: Beware of contemplating about [the essence of] Allah, for contemplation about Allah only increases in deviation. Surely, Allah cannot be comprehended by sights, and He cannot be described by measurement.

4 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا عبد الله بن جعفر الحميري، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن الحسن بن محبوب، عن عنبسة العابد، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام)، قال: إياكم والخصومة في الدين، فإنها تشغل القلب عن ذكر الله عز وجل، وتورث النفاق، وتكسب الضغائن، وتستجيز الكذب (3).

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (rh) narrated to us. He said: Abdullah b. Ja`far al-Himyari narrated to us. He said: Ahmad .b Muhammad b. `Isa narrated to us from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from `Anbasa al-`Abid from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as). He said: Beware of arguing in religion, for it distracts the heart from the remembrance of Allah, it bequeaths hypocrisy, it forms grudges, and it makes lying easy.

5 - وبهذا الاسناد، عن الحسن بن محبوب، عن العلاء بن رزين، عن محمد بن مسلم، عن أبي جعفر الباقر (عليه السلام)، قال: لما خلق الله عز وجل العقل استنطقه، ثم قال له: أقبل، فأقبل، ثم قال له: أدبر، فأدبر، ثم قال له: وعزتي وجلالي ما خلقت خلقا هو أحب إلي منك، ولا أكملك إلا فيمن أحب، أما إني إياك آمر، وإياك أنهى، وإياك أعاقب، وإياك أثيب (1).

By this isnad from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from al-`Ala' b. Ruzayn from Muhammad b. Muslim from Abi Ja`far al-Baqir (as). He said: When Allah created the intellect, He interrogated it. Then, He said to it: Come forth. So, it came forth. Then, He said to it: Go back. So, it went back. Then, He said to it: By My glory and My majesty! I have not created a thing that is more beloved to Me than you. I do not perfect you except in those whom I love. Surely, by you I command, by you I prohibit, by you I punish, and by you I reward.

6 - حدثنا علي بن أحمد بن موسى (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثني محمد بن يعقوب، قال: حدثني علي بن محمد بن عبد الله، عن إبراهيم بن إسحاق الاحمر، عن محمد بن سليمان الديلمي، عن أبيه، قال: قلت لابي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام): فلان من عبادته ودينه وفضله كذا وكذا. قال: فقال: كيف عقله؟ فقلت: لا أدري. فقال: إن الثواب على قدر العقل، إن رجلا من بني إسرائيل كان يعبد الله عز وجل في جزيرة من جزائر البحر خضراء نضرة كثيرة الشجر طاهرة الماء، وإن ملكا من الملائكة مر به فقال: يا رب، أرني ثواب عبدك هذا. فأراه الله عز وجل ذلك، فاستقله الملك، فأوحى الله عز وجل إليه: أن اصحبه. فأتاه الملك في صورة إنسي، فقال له: من أنت؟ قال: أنا رجل عابد، بلغنا مكانك وعبادتك بهذا المكان، فجئت لا عبد الله معك. فكان معه يومه ذلك، فلما أصبح قال له الملك، إن مكانك لنزهة. قال: ليت لربنا بهيمة، فلو كان لربنا حمار لرعيناه في هذا الموضع، فإن هذا الحشيش يضيع. فقال له الملك: وما لربك حمار؟ فقال: لو كان له حمار ما كان يضيع مثل هذا الحشيش، فأوحى الله عز وجل إلى الملك، إنما أثيبه على قدر عقله. وقال الصادق (عليه السلام): ما كلم رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) العباد بكنه عقله قط. قال: وقال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): إنا معاشر الانبياء أمرنا أن نكلم الناس على قدر عقولهم (2).

`Ali b. Ahmad b. Musa (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Ya`qub narrated to me. He said: `Ali b. Muhammad b. `Abdullah narrated to me from Ibrahim b. Ishaq al-Ahmar from Muhammad b. Sulayman al-Daylami from his father. He said: I spoke to Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as), describing the worship, religion, virtue, and so on of a person. He said: So, he said: How is his intellect? So, I said: I do not know. So, he said: Surely, good deeds are at the proportion of one’s intellect. Surely, a man from the Children of Israel would worship Allah on a green, verdant island with any trees and pure water. Then, an angel from among the angels passed by him and said: “O Lord! Show me the rewards of the deeds of this servant of Yours.” So, Allah showed that to him, and the angel considered it minor. So, Allah revealed to him, telling him to accompany him. So, the angel came to him in the form of a human. So, he said to him: “Who are you?” He said: “I am a worshiping man. We were informed about your position and your worship in this place, so I came to worship Allah with you.” He was with him on that day, so at its end, the angel said to him: “This place of yours is a retreat.” He said: “If only our Lord had a beast. If our Lord had a donkey, we would have herded it in this place, for this grass is so luscious that it could get lost in it.” So, the angel said to him: “Does your Lord not have a donkey?” So, he said: “If He had a donkey, this grass would not go to waste.” So, Allah revealed to the angel: “Surely, I will only reward him in proportion to his intellect.” Al-Sadiq (as) said: The Messenger of Allah (s) never spoke to the worshipers at the level of his own intellect. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: We the prophets were commanded to speak to the people at the level of their intellect.

7 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن الصفار، عن العباس بن معروف، عن بكر بن محمد الازدي، عن أبي بصير، قال: قال أبو عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام): أصول الكفر ثلاثة: الحرص، والاستكبار، والحسد، فأما الحرص فإن آدم (عليه السلام) حين نهي عن الشجرة حمله الحرص إلى أن أكل منها، وأما الاستكبار فإبليس حين أمر بالسجود لآدم استكبر، وأما الحسد فابنا آدم حين قتل أحدهما صاحبه حسدا (1).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us from al-`Abbas b. Ma`ruf from Bakr b. Muhammad al-Azdi from Abi Basir. He said: Abu `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) said: The foundations of disbelief are three: greed, arrogance, and envy. As for greed, when Adam (as) was prohibited from the tree, greed caused him to eat from it. As for arrogance, when Iblis refused to prostrate to Adam, he was arrogant. As for envy, one of Adam's sons killed the other due to envy.

8 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن الحسين بن يزيد النوفلي، عن إسماعيل بن مسلم السكوني، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، عن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله)، قال: أركان الكفر أربعة: الرغبة، والرهبة، والسخط، والغضب (2).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father Ibrahim b. Hashim from la-Husayn . Yazid al-Nawfali from Isma`il b. Muslim al-Sukuni from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers (as) from the Messenger of Allah (s). He said: The pillars of disbelief are four: (1) desire, (2) fear, (3) discontent, and (4) anger.

9 - حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن يحيى العطار (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا أبي، عن يعقوب بن يزيد، عن زياد بن مروان القندي، عن أبي وكيع، عن أبي إسحاق السبيعي، عن الحارث الاعور، عن علي (عليه السلام)، قال: لا يصلح من الكذب جد ولا هزل، ولا أن يعد أحدكم صبيه ثم لا يفي له، إن الكذب يهدي إلى الفجور، والفجور يهدي إلى النار، وما يزال أحدكم يكذب حتى يقال: كذب وفجر وما يزال أحدكم يكذب حتى لا يبقى في قلبه موضع إبرة صدق، فيسمى عند الله كذابا (3).

Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from Ya`qub b. Yazid from Ziyad b. Marwan al-Qindi from Abi Waki` from Abi Ishaq al-Sabi`i from al-Harith al-A`war from `Ali (as). He said: There is no good in lying nor in mockery, nor in promising your child something then failing to fulfill it. Lying leads to immorality, and immorality leads to the Fire. One of you may not stop lying until it is said: “he lies, and he has committed immorality.” One of you may not stop lying until there is not an iota of honesty in his heart, so he will be called a liar with Allah.

10 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن الصفار، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أبيه، عن غير واحد، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، قال: لا تغتب فتغتب، ولا تحفر لاخيك حفرة فتقع فيها، فإنك كما تدين تدان (4).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (rh) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narated to us from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi from his father from another person from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: Do not anger others, or else you will be angered; and do not dig a hole for your brother, or else you will fall in it. Surely, you will reap what you sow.

/ 11 - وبهذا الاسناد، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله، قال: حدثنا الحسين بن يزيد، عن إسماعيل بن مسلم، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): الجلوس في المسجد لانتظار الصلاة عبادة ما لم يحدث. قيل: يا رسول الله، وما الحدث؟ قال: الاغتياب (1).

By this isnad from Ahmad b. Abi Abdillah. He said: Al-Husayn b. Yazid narrated to us from Isma`il b. Muslim from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers (as). He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Sitting in the mosque waiting for the prayer is worship for one who does not nullify. It was said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the nullifier? He said: Backbiting.

12 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن الحسن بن علي بن فضال، عن ثعلبة بن ميمون، عن أبي جميلة المفضل بن صالح، عن أبان بن تغلب، عن أبي عبد الله (عليه السلام)، قال: إذا قال العبد: علم الله، فكان كاذبا، قال الله عز وجل: أما وجدت أحدا تكذب عليه غيري؟! (2).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa from al-Hasan b. `Ali b. Faddal from Tha`laba b. Maymun from Abi Jamila al-Mufaddal b. Salih from Aban b. Taghlub from Abi `Abdillah (as). He said: Whoever swears by Allah whilst lying, Allah says: “Did you not find anyone else to lie upon besides Myself?!”

13 - وبهذا الاسناد، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن عثمان بن عيسى، عن وهب، عن شهاب بن عبد ربه، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام)، قال: من قال الله يعلم، فيما لم يعلم، اهتز العرش إعظاما له (3).

By this isnad from Ahmad b. Muhammad from `Uthman b. `Isa from Wahb from Shihab b. `Abd Rabbih from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as). He said: Whoever says "Allah knows" regarding something that he does not know, the Throne shakes out of the greatness of Allah.

14 - حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن مسرور (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا الحسين بن محمد بن عامر، عن معلى بن محمد البصري، عن علي بن أسباط، عن جعفر بن سماعة، عن غير واحد، عن زرارة بن أعين، قال: سألت أبا جعفر الباقر (عليه السلام): ما حق الله على العباد؟ قال: أن يقولوا ما يعلمون، ويقفوا عند ما لا يعلمون (4).

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Masruq (rh) narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. Muhammad b. `Amer narrated to us from Mu`alla b. Muhammad al-Basri from `Ali b. Asbat from Ja`far b. Sama`a from another person from Zurara b. A`yan. He said: I asked Aba Ja`far al-Baqir (as): What is the right that Allah has over a worshiper? He said: To say only that which they know, and to stop at that which they do not know.

15 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن يونس بن يعقوب، عن أبي يعقوب إسحاق بن عبد الله، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام)، قال: إن الله تبارك وتعالى عير عباده بآيتين من كتابه: أن لا يقولوا حتى يعلموا، ولا يردوا ما لم يعلموا، قال الله عز وجل: (ألم يؤخذ عليهم ميثاق الكتاب أن لا يقولوا على الله إلا الحق) (5)، وقال: (بل كذبوا بما لم يحيطوا بعلمه ولما يأتهم تأويله) (1).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father from Ibn Abi `Umayr from Yunus b. Ya`qub from Abi Ya`qub Ishaq b. `Abdullah from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as). He said: Allah reproaches His servants with two verses from His Book: to not speak until they know, and to not respond to that which they do not know. Allah says, “Was a covenant not taken from them in the Book that they would not say anything about Allah except the truth?” (7:169), and He says, “In fact, they rejected the Book without comprehending it and before the fulfilment of its warnings.” (10:39)

16 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن محمد بن عيسى بن عبيد، عن يونس بن عبد الرحمن، عن داود بن فرقد، عن ابن شبرمة، قال: ما ذكرت حديثا سمعته من جعفر بن محمد (عليه السلام) إلا كاد أن يتصدع له قلبي، سمعته يقول حدثني أبي، عن جدي، عن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) - قال ابن شبرمة: وأقسم بالله ما كذب على أبيه، ولا كذب أبوه 706 على جده، ولا كذب جده على رسول الله - قال: من عمل بالمقاييس فقد هلك وأهلك، ومن أفتى الناس وهو لا يعلم الناسخ من المنسوخ والمحكم من المتشابه فقد هلك وأهلك (2).

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from Muhammad b. `Isa b. `Ubayd from Yunus b. `Abd al-Rahman from Dawud b. Farqad from Ibn Shabrama. He said: I never mentioned a hadith that I heard from Ja`far b. Muhammad (as) except that my heart would break for him. I heard him say: My father narrated to me from my grandfather from the Messenger of Allah (s). Ibn Shabrama said: By Allah, he would not lie upon his father, and his father would not lie upon his grandfather, and his grandfather would not lie upon the Messenger of Allah. He [(s)] said: Whoever acts by analogies (qiyas) is destroyed and has destroyed others. Whoever gave rulings to the people without knowing the abrogating from the abrogated nor the decisive from the allegorical is destroyed and has destroyed others.

/ 17 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن الصفار، عن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن إسماعيل بن مرار، عن يونس بن عبد الرحمن، عن غير واحد، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام)، قال: قام عيسى بن مريم (عليه السلام) خطيبا في بني إسرائيل، فقال: يا بني إسرائيل، لا تحدثوا الجهال بالحكمة فتظلموها، ولا تمنعوها أهلها فتظلموهم (3).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us from Ibrahim b. Hashim from Isma`il b. Marrar from Yunus b. `Abd al-Rahman from another person from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as). He said: `Isa b. Maryam (as) stood to deliver a sermon to the Children of Israel. So, he said: O Children of Israel! Do not impart wisdom to the ignorant, for you will have oppressed it; and do not prevent it from its people, for you will have oppressed them.

704 705 / 18 - حدثنا أبي، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن سنان، عن طلحة بن زيد، قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام) يقول: العامل على غير بصيرة كالسائر على غير الطريق ولا يزيده سرعه السير من الطريق إلا بعدا (4).

My father narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid from his father from Muhammad b. Sinan from Talha b. Zayd. He said: I heard Aba `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) say: One who acts without insight is like one who travels without a path. If he increases his speed in his travel, he only gets further away from the path.

/ 19 - حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن يحيى العطار (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا أبي، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن محمد بن سنان، عن ابن مسكان، عن الحسن بن زياد الصيقل، قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام) يقول: لا يقبل الله عز وجل عملا إلا بمعرفة، ولا معرفة إلا بعمل، فمن عرف دلته المعرفة على العمل، ومن لم يعمل فلا معرفة له، إن الايمان بعضه من بعض (1).

Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa from Muhammad b. Sinan from Ibn Muskan from al-Hasan b. Ziyad al-Sayqal. He said: I heard Aba `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) say: Allah does not accept action without recognition (ma`rifa), nor recognition without action. Whoever recognizes, his recognition will lead him to action. Whoever has no actions has no recognition. Surely, part of faith is from its other part.
