76. Permission Not to Perform the Ghusl Before the Ziyārah of Ĥusain (a.s.)

1 حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي وَ أَخِي عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَتَّوَيْهِ بْنِ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْخَطَّابِ بِالْكُوفَةِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنِ الْعِيصِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ الْبَجَلِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) مَنْ زَارَ الْحُسَيْنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ (ع) عَلَيْهِ غُسْلٌ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَا وَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ره عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي خَلَفٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنِ الْعِيصِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) مِثْلَهُ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنِ الْعِيصِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) مِثْلَهُ


1. My father and my brother both narrated to me from Ĥasan ibn Mutawayh ibn Sindi, from his father, from Muĥammad ibn Ĥusain ibn Abil Khaťťāb in the city of Kūfah, from Šafwān ibn Yaĥyā, from ‘Ǐš ibn Qāsim Al-Bajali, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)), “Is it obligatory to perform Ghusl before going to the Ziyārah of Ĥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.)?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “No.” The above Ĥadǐth has also been narrated to me through the following chains: A) My father, from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn Abǐ Khalaf, from Muĥammad ibn Ĥusain ibn Abil Kaťťāb, from Šafwān (ibn Yaĥyā), from ‘Ǐš ibn Qāsim, from Abǐ ‘Abdillāh (a.s.). B) Muĥammad ibn Ĥasan, from Muĥammad ibn Ĥasan Al-Šaffār, from Muĥammad ibn ‘Abdil Jabbār, from Šafwān (ibn Yaĥyā), from ‘Ǐš (ibn Qāsim), from Abǐ ‘Abdillāh (a.s.).




2 حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ أَبِي الْيَسَعِ قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) وَ أَنَا أَسْمَعُ عَنِ الْغُسْلِ إِذَا أَتَى قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) فَقَالَ لَا حَدَّثَنِي جَمَاعَةُ مَشَايِخِي عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ نُوحٍ وَ غَيْرِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَسَعِ وَ ذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ نُوحٍ وَ غَيْرِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ أَبِي الْيَسَعِ قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) وَ ذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ


2. ‘Ali ibn Ĥusain ibn Mūsā narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Aĥmad ibn Muĥammad ibn ‘Isā, from ‘Abbās ibn Ma’rūf, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Mughǐrah, from Abil Yasa’, who said: I heard a man ask Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) if one has to perform Ghusl before going to (the Ziyārah of) the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.). Imam (a.s.) replied, “No.” The above Ĥadǐth has also been narrated to me through the following chains: A) All of my scholars, from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Muĥammad ibn Ĥusain, from Ayyūb ibn Nūĥ, and from others, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Mughǐrah, from Abil Yasā’, from Abǐ ‘Abdillāh (a.s.). B) Muĥammad ibn Aĥmad ibn Ĥusain, from Ĥasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Mahziyār, from his father ‘Ali, from Ayyūb ibn Nūĥ, and from others, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Mughǐrah, from Abil Yasa’, from Abǐ ‘Abdillāh (a.s.).




3 حَدَّثَنِي جَمَاعَةُ مَشَايِخِي عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْعَطَّارِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي زَاهِرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ سَيْفِ بْنِ عَمِيرَةَ عَنِ الْعِيصِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ الْبَجَلِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) مَنْ زَارَ الْحُسَيْنَ (ع) عَلَيْهِ غُسْلٌ قَالَ لَا


3. All of my scholars narrated to me from Muĥammad ibn Yaĥyā Al-‘Aťťār, from Aĥmad ibn Abǐ Zāhir, from Muĥammad ibn Ĥusain ibn Abil Khaťťāb, from Šafwān ibn Yaĥyā, from Sayf ibn ‘Amǐrah, from ‘Ǐš ibn Qāsim Al-Bajali, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)), “Is it obligatory to perform Ghusl before going to the Ziyārah of Ĥusain (a.s.)?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “No.”




4 حَدَّثَنِي جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُوسَى الْكَاظِمِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الصَّادِقِ (ع) عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نَهِيكٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَبِي حَنِيفَةَ السَّابِقِ [السَّائِقِ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ إِذَا كُنْتَ مِنْهُ قَرِيباً يَعْنِي الْحُسَيْنَ (ع) فَإِنْ أَصَبْتَ غُسْلًا فَاغْتَسِلْ وَ إِلَّا فَتَوَضَّأْ ثُمَّ ائْتِهِ


4. Ja’far ibn Muĥammad ibn Ibrāhǐm ibn ‘Ubaydillāh ibn Mūsā Al-Kāżim (a.s.) ibn Jafar Al-Šādiq (a.s.), narrated to me from ‘Ubaydillāh ibn Nahǐk, from Muĥammad ibn Ziyād, from Abǐ Ĥanǐfah Al-Sābiq, from Yūnus ibn ‘Ammār, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) said: If you are close (in proximity) to him – referring to Ĥusain (a.s.) – and it is possible to perform Ghusl before going to him, do so. Otherwise, perform Wuďū and then go to him.




5 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ أَبِي نَابٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) عَنِ الْغُسْلِ إِذَا أَتَيْتُ قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) قَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ غُسْلٌ


5. Muĥammad ibn Aĥmad ibn Ya’qūb narrated to me from ‘Ali ibn Ĥasan ibn Faďďāl, from ‘Abbās ibn ‘Āmir, from Abǐ Nāb Ĥasan ibn ‘Aťiyyāh, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Šādiq (a.s.)) about performing Ghusl when going to (the Ziyārah of) the grave of Ĥusain (a.s.). Imam (a.s.) replied, “Performing Ghusl is not obligatory.”




6 حَدَّثَنِي الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الزِّبْرِقَانِ الطَّبَرِيُّ بِإِسْنَادٍ لَهُ يَرْفَعُهُ إِلَى الصَّادِقِ (ع) قَالَ قُلْتُ رُبَّمَا أَتَيْنَا قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) فَيَصْعُبُ عَلَيْنَا الْغُسْلُ لِلزِّيَارَةِ مِنَ الْبَرْدِ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ فَقَالَ (ع) مَنِ اغْتَسَلَ فِي الْفُرَاتِ وَ زَارَ الْحُسَيْنَ (ع) كُتِبَ لَهُ مِنَ الْفَضْلِ مَا لَا يُحْصَى فَمَتَى مَا رَجَعَ إِلَى الْمَوْضِعِ الَّذِي اغْتَسَلَ فِيهِ وَ تَوَضَّأَ وَ زَارَ الْحُسَيْنَ (ع) كُتِبَ لَهُ ذَلِكَ الثَّوَابُ


6. Ĥasan ibn Zibriqān Al-Ťabari narrated to me through his Isnād, from someone who said: I said to Imam Šādiq (a.s.), “Sometimes when we go to the Ziyārah of Ĥusain (a.s.), it is difficult to perform Ghusl because of the cold (climate) or for other reasons.” Imam (a.s.) replied, “So many merits will be registered for those who go to the Euphrates (River) and perform Ghusl in it before going to the Ziyārah of Ĥusain (a.s.), that they cannot be counted. And if they return anytime (in the future) to the place where they performed Ghusl, and (instead) perform Wuďū before going to the Ziyārah of Ĥusain (a.s.), the same (extent of) rewards will be registered for them.”
