Prohibition of Burning Papers With Writings on Them
5 Aḥadīth
Ḥadīth 1

1ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْقَرَاطِيسِ تَجْتَمِعُ هَلْ تُحْرَقُ بِالنَّارِ وَفِيهَا شَيْ‏ءٌ مِنْ ذِكْرِ الله قَالَ لا تُغْسَلُ بِالْمَاءِ أَوَّلاً قَبْلُ.

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Utbah who has said the following: “Once I asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.) about the papers that accumulate if they can be burned in which names of Allah may also be found. The Imam said, ‘No, they must not be burned instead, first they should be washed with water.’”

Ḥadīth 2

2ـ عَنْهُ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ سِنَانٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ لا تُحْرِقُوا الْقَرَاطِيسَ وَلَكِنِ امْحُوهَا وَحَرِّقُوهَا.

2. It is narrated from him (narrator of the Hadith above) from al-Washsha’ from ‘Abdullah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘Do not burn the papers, but wipe or wash them away and then you may burn them.’”

Ḥadīth 3

3ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) عَنِ الإسْمِ مِنْ أَسْمَاءِ الله يَمْحُوهُ الرَّجُلُ بِالتُّفْلِ قَالَ امْحُوهُ بِأَطْهَرِ مَا تَجِدُونَ.

3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman from Zurara who has said the following: “Once Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) was asked about a name of the names of Allah that a man tries to delete with his saliva. The Imam said, ‘It should be deleted with the cleanest thing that you can find.’”

Ḥadīth 4

4ـ عَلِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) امْحُوا كِتَابَ الله تَعَالَى وَذِكْرَهُ بِأَطْهَرِ مَا تَجِدُونَ وَنَهَى أَنْ يُحْرَقَ كِتَابُ الله وَنَهَى أَنْ يُمْحَى بِالأقْلامِ.

4. Ali has narrated from his father from al-Nawfali from al-Sakuni from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘You may delete (writing of) the book of Allah, the Most High and words mentioning Him with the cleanest thing that you can find.’ He prohibited the burning of the book of Allah and to delete it with a pen.’”

Ḥadīth 5

5ـ عَلِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) فِي الظُّهُورِ الَّتِي فِيهَا ذِكْرُ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَالَ اغْسِلْهَا.

5. Ali has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar from abu al-Hassan Musa (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Imam (a.s.) was asked about the surfaces on which a mention of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, is written. The Imam said, ‘Wash it clean.’”
