Another question is posed to them: If a mutawātir (widely transmitted) report is a proof when narrated by both the ʿitrah and the Ummah, and if a solitary report from a member of the ʿitrah is like a solitary report from the rest of the Ummah—such that it is possible for the individual to lie deliberately, or err, or slip, just as it is possible for an individual from the Ummah—and if what is not found in a mutawātir report or a solitary report must, according to you, be derived by reasoning, and if it is permissible for your interpreter to err as it is for others in the Ummah, then by what criterion have the ʿitrah become a proof? If the author says: "When they unanimously agree, their consensus is a proof," it is said to him: "When the Ummah unanimously agrees, its consensus is also a proof." This leads to there being no difference between the ʿitrah and the Ummah. And if that is the case, then the statement "I leave among you the Book of Allah and my ʿitrah" has no benefit—unless among them is someone who is a proof in religion. And this is the view of the Imamiyyah.
Know—may Allah grant you success—that the author of the book busied himself thereafter with reciting the Qur’an and interpreting it however he liked, without ever saying: “My evidence for the soundness of this interpretation is such-and-such.” This is something even children could do. His intention was only to criticize the Imamiyyah for allegedly not believing in jihād, enjoining good, and forbidding evil. But he is mistaken, for they believe in it to the extent of one’s capability, and they do not believe in casting themselves into destruction, nor in going out with someone who does not know the Book and Sunnah or how to govern the people with justice and truth.
What is more astonishing is that our own companions from the Zaydīs, while in their homes, neither enjoin good nor forbid evil nor perform jihād, yet they criticize us for this. This is the height of unfair bias and a sign of sectarian prejudice. We seek refuge in Allah from following whims. He is sufficient for us, and the best disposer of affairs.
