1- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ مَا الزُّهْدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا قَالَ وَيْحَكَ حَرَامَهَا فَتَنَكَّبْهُ.

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), about the meaning of restraint from worldly matters. He (the Imam) said, Tie upon you! It is (not difficult to understand) knowing what is unlawful so that you can avoid it.’” 

2- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ الْجَهْمِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) لَيْسَ الزُّهْدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا بِإِضَاعَةِ الْمَالِ وَلا تَحْرِيمِ الْحَلالِ بَلِ الزُّهْدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا أَنْ لا تَكُونَ بِمَا فِي يَدِكَ أَوْثَقَ مِنْكَ بِمَا عِنْدَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.

2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from al-Jahm ibn al-Hakam from ‘Isma’il ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Zuhd (restraint from worldly matters) is not in wasting one’s belongings or making lawful things unlawful.’” 

3- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ عَنْ مَعْرُوفِ بْنِ خَرَّبُوذَ عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ الزُّهْدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا قَصْرُ الأمَلِ وَشُكْرُ كُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ وَالْوَرَعُ عَنْ كُلِّ مَا حَرَّمَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ. 

3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Malik ibn ‘Atiyyah from M’aruf ibn Kharbudh from abu al-Tufayl who has said the following: “I heard ‘Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), saying, ‘Zuhd (restraint from worldly matters) in the world is to shorten one’s hopes, give thanks for every bounty and restrain from everything that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has made unlawful.’”
