1. It is narrated to us by Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from his father Muhammad Bin Isa, from Abdullah Bin Talha who said, ‘I said to Abu Abdullah (a.s.), ‘Inform me, O son (a.s.) of Rasool-Allah (saww), about the knowledge which you (a.s.) are narrating with, is it from books which are with you (a.s.) or from reports having been narrated from one (a.s.) to another (a.s.), or how is the state of the knowledge with you (a.s.) all?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘O Abdullah! The matter is more magnificent than that and more majestic. Have you not read the Book of Allah ?’ I said, ‘Yes’. He (a.s.) said: ‘Have you read: And like that We Sent down a Spirit unto you from Our Command. You (people) did not know what the Book was, nor the Eman, [42:52]? Are you viewing that he (saww) was in a state he (saww) didn’t know what the Book was nor the Eman?’ I said, ‘That is how we are reading it’. He (a.s.) said: ‘Yes, he (saww) was in a state he (saww) did not know what the Book was nor the Eman until Allah Sent that Spirit, and Taught him (saww) through it, the knowledge and the understanding, and like that the Spirit flows when Allah Sends it to a servant to Teach him the knowledge and the understanding through it’’.

2. It is narrated to us by Ibrahim Bin Hashim, from abu Abdullah Al Barqy, from Ibn Sinan, or someone else from Abdullah Bin Talha who said, ‘I said to Abu Abdullah (a.s.), ‘Inform me, O son (a.s.) of Rasool-Allah (saww), about the knowledge which you (a.s.) are narrating to us with. Is it from Parchments which are with you (a.s.), or from reports you (a.s.) have reported from each other, or how is the state of the knowledge in your (a.s.) possession?’ Abu Abdullah (a.s.) said: ‘The matter is greater than that and more majestic. Have you not read the Book of Allah ?’ I said, ‘Yes’. He (a.s.) said: ‘Have you not read: And like that We Sent down a Spirit unto you from Our Command. You (people) did not know what the Book was, nor the Eman, [42:52]? Don’t you see that he (saww) was in a state he (saww) neither knew the Book nor the Eman?’ He (the narrator) said, ‘I said, ‘That is how we are reading it’. He (a.s.) said: ‘Yes, he (saww) had been in a state of neither knowing what the Book was nor the Eman until Allah Sent that Spirit and Taught him (saww) the knowledge and the understanding by it’’.

3. Muhammad Bin Isa, from Hammad Bin Isa, from Ibrahim Bin Umar who said, I said to Abu Abdullah (a.s.), ‘Inform me about the knowledge which you (a.s.) know, is it something you (a.s.) are learning from the mouths of men, one from the other, or something written with you (a.s.) from Rasool-Allah (saww)?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘The matter is more magnificent than that. Have you not heard the Words of Allah Mighty and Majestic in His Book: And like that We Sent down a Spirit unto you from Our Command. You (people) did not know what the Book was, nor the Eman, [42:52]?’ He (the narrator) said, ‘I said, ‘Yes (I have)’. He (a.s.) said: ‘When Allah Gave him (a.s.) that Spirit, he (saww) came to know with it, and like that when it ends up to a servant, he (a.s.) comes to know of that knowledge and the understanding displayed with himself (a.s.)’’.

4. It is narrated to us by Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Al Husayn Bin Saeed, from Muhammad Bin Sinan, from Ziyad Bin Abu Al Hallal who said, ‘I had heard Ahadeeth from Jabir and my heart was disturbed regarding these and I was straitened with intense straitening. I said, ‘By Allah ! The rest is near, and I am strong upon it’, so I bought a camel and went out to Al-Medina and sought the permission to see Abu Abdullah (a.s.). He (a.s.) permitted for me. When he (a.s.) looked at me, said: ‘May Allah have Mercy on Jabir. He was truthful upon us (a.s.), and may Allah Curse Al-Mugheira, for he was lying upon us (a.s.)’. He (the narrator) said, ‘Then he (a.s.) said: ‘Among us (a.s.) is the Spirit (which was with) Rasool-Allah (saww)’’.

5. It is narrated to us by Abu Muhammad, from Imran Bin Musa, from Musa Bin Ja’far Al Baghdady, from Ali Bin Asbat, from Muhammad Bin Al Fuzeyl, from Abu Hamza who said, ‘I asked Abu Abdullah (a.s.) about the knowledge, ‘What is it? Is it knowledge the scholar (a.s.) learn from the mouths of men, or in a book with you (a.s.), you (a.s.) are reading it and learning from it?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘The matter is more magnificent than that and more majestic. Have you not heard Words of Allah Blessed and Exalted: And like that We Sent down a Spirit unto you from Our Command. You (people) did not know what the Book was, nor the Eman, [42:52]?’ Then he (a.s.) said: ‘And which thing are your companions saying regarding this Verse? He (saww) was in a state he (saww) did not know what the Book was nor the Eman until Allah Sent that Spirit to him (saww) which Allah Gives to ones He so Desires to. So, when Allah Gives it to a servant, he (a.s.) knows the understanding and the knowledge’’.
