6. Regarding the imams (asws), they (asws) made to understand and guided regarding what cannot be found in the book and the sunnah

حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ عَنْ سَوْرَةَ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بِأَيِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ يُفْتِي الْإِمَامُ قَالَ بِالْكِتَابِ قُلْتُ فَمَا لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي الْكِتَابِ قَالَ بِالسُّنَّةِ قُلْتُ فَمَا لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي الْكِتَابِ وَ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ لَيْسَ شَيْ‏ءٌ إِلَّا فِي الْكِتَابِ وَ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ فَكَرَّرْتُ مَرَّةً أَوِ اثْنَتَيْنِ قَالَ يُسَدَّدُ وَ يُوَفَّقُ فَأَمَّا مَا تَظُنُّ فَلَا.


1. It is narrated to us by Al Abbas Bin Marouf, from Hammad Bin Isa, from Rabie, from Sowrah Bin Kuleyb who said, ‘I said to Abu Abdullah (a.s.), ‘By which thing does the Imam (a.s.) issue a verdict (Fatwa)?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘By the Book’. I said, ‘So what does not happen to be in the Book?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘By the Sunnah’. I said, ‘So, what does not happen to be in the Book and the Sunnah?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘There isn’t anything except it is in the Book and the Sunnah’. He (the narrator) said, ‘I reiterated once or twice. He (a.s.) said: ‘He (a.s.) is guided and harmonised. As for what you are thinking, so no’’.




حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ عَنْ خَيْثَمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ يَكُونُ شَيْ‏ءٌ لَا يَكُونُ فِي الْكِتَابِ وَ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ لَا قَالَ قُلْتُ فَإِنْ جَاءَ شَيْ‏ءٌ قَالَ لَا حَتَّى أَعَدْتُ عَلَيْهِ مِرَاراً فَقَالَ لَا يَجِي‏ءُ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ بِتَوْفِيقٍ وَ تَسْدِيدٍ لَيْسَ حَيْثُ تَذْهَبُ لَيْسَ حَيْثُ تَذْهَبُ.


2. It is narrated to us by Yaqoub Bin Yazeed, from Al Hassan Bin Ayoub, from Ali Bin Ismail, from Rabie, from Khaysam, ‘From Abu Abdullah (a.s.), he (the narrator) said, ‘I said to him (a.s.), ‘Can something not happen to be in the Book and the Sunnah?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘No’. I said, ‘Supposing something comes?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘No’. Until I reiterated to him a few times, he (a.s.) said: ‘It will not come. Then he (a.s.) said by his (a.s.) finger: ‘By Inclination and harmonisation and guidance. It isn’t where you are going, it isn’t where you are going (with it)’’.




حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ الْمِيثَمِيِّ عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ عَنْ خَيْثَمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ يَكُونُ شَيْ‏ءٌ لَا يَكُونُ فِي الْكِتَابِ وَ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَإِنْ جَاءَ شَيْ‏ءٌ قَالَ لَا يَجِي‏ءُ فَأَعَدْتُ عَلَيْهِ مِرَاراً فَقَالَ لَا يَجِي‏ءُ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا خَيْثَمُ يُوَفَّقُ وَ يُسَدَّدُ لَيْسَ حَيْثُ تَذْهَبُ.


3. It is narrated to us by Ahmad Bin Al Husayn Bin Saeed, from Al Maysami, from Rabie, from Khaysam, ‘From Abu Abdullah (a.s.), he (the narrator) said, ‘I said to him (a.s.), ‘Can there be something not happens to be in the Book and the Sunnah?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘No’. I said, ‘Supposing something comes?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘It will not come’. I repeated to him (a.s.) a few times, he (a.s.) said: ‘It will not come’. Then he (a.s.) said: ‘O Khaysam! He (a.s.) is harmonised, and guided. It isn’t where you are going (with it)’’.




حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: سَأَلَهُ سَوْرَةُ وَ أَنَا شَاهِدٌ فَقَالَ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ بِمَا يُفْتِي الْإِمَامُ قَالَ بِالْكِتَابِ قَالَ فَمَا لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي الْكِتَابِ قَالَ بِالسُّنَّةِ قَالَ فَمَا لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي الْكِتَابِ وَ السُّنَّةِ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ مِنْ شَيْ‏ءٍ إِلَّا فِي الْكِتَابِ وَ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ ثُمَّ مَكَثَ سَاعَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ يُوَفَّقُ وَ يُسَدَّدُ وَ لَيْسَ كَمَا تَظُنُّ.


4. It is narrated to us by Muhammad Bin Al Husayn, from Ja’far Bin Bashir, from Hammad Bin Usman, ‘From Abu Abdullah (a.s.), he (the narrator) said, ‘Sowrat asked him (a.s.), and I am a witness. He said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you (a.s.)! By what does the Imam (a.s.) issue a verdict?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘By the Book’. He said, ‘So, what does not happen to be in the Book?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘By the Sunnah’. He said, ‘So, what does not happen to be in the Book and the Sunnah?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘There isn’t anything except it is in the Book and the Sunnah’. Then he (a.s.) waited for a while, then said: ‘He (a.s.) is harmonised, and guided, and it isn’t as what you are thinking (it to be)’’.




حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ سَوْرَةَ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ بِمِنًى فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ الْإِمَامُ بِأَيِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ يَحْكُمُ قَالَ بِالْكِتَابِ قُلْتُ فَمَا لَيْسَ فِي الْكِتَابِ قَالَ بِالسُّنَّةِ قُلْتُ فَمَا لَيْسَ فِي السُّنَّةِ وَ لَا فِي الْكِتَابِ قَالَ فَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ قَدْ أَعْرِفُ الَّذِي تُرِيدُ يُسَدَّدُ وَ يُوَفَّقُ وَ لَيْسَ كَمَا تَظُنُّ.


5. It is narrated to us by Al Abbas Bin Marouf, from Hammad Bin Isa, from hareyz, from Sowrat Bin Kuleyb, ‘From Abu Abdullah (a.s.), he (the narrator) said, ‘I entered to see him (a.s.) at Mina, and I said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you (a.s.)! The Imam (a.s.), by which thing does he (a.s.) judge?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘By the Book’. I said, ‘So, what isn’t in the Book?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘By the Sunnah’. I said, ‘So, what isn’t in the Sunnah nor in the Book?’ He (a.s.) said by his (a.s.) hand: ‘I (a.s.) have understood that which you intend. He (a.s.) is guided, and harmonised, and it isn’t as what you are thinking (it to be)’’.
