13. Regarding the imams (asws), when an imam (asws) from them (asws) passes away, he (asws) recognises the one (asws) after him (asws)

حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي الْجَارُودِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِذَا مَضَى عَالِمُكُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ بِأَيِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ يُعْرَفُ الَّذِي يَجِي‏ءُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ قَالَ بِالْهِدَايَةِ وَ الْإِطْرَاقِ وَ إِقْرَارِ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ص بِالْفَضْلِ وَ لَا يُسْأَلُ عَنْ شَيْ‏ءٍ مِمَّا بَيْنَ دَفَّتَيْنِ إِلَّا أَجَابَ عَنْهُ.


1. It is narrated to us by Al Husayn Bin Muhammad, from Abu Ja’far Muhammad Al Rabie, from a man from our companions, from Abu Al Jaroud who said, ‘I said to Abu Ja’far (a.s.), ‘May I be sacrificed for you (a.s.)! When the scholar of People (a.s.) of your (a.s.) Household passes away, by which thing does he (a.s.) recognise the one (a.s.) who would come to be from after him (a.s.)?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘By the guidance, and the lowering of the head to ponder, and the acknowledgment of Progeny (a.s.) of Muhammad (saww) with the merit, and he (a.s.) will not be asked about anything from what is between the two covers (of the Quran), except he (a.s.) would answer about it’’.




وَ عَنْهُ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُمْهُورٍ عَنْ مُوسَى عَنِ الْحَنَّانِ عَنِ الْحَرْثِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بِمَ يُعْرَفُ صَاحِبُ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ قَالَ بِالسَّكِينَةِ وَ الْوَقَارِ وَ الْعِلْمِ وَ الْوَصِيَّةِ.


2. And from it, from Mu‘alla Bin Muhammad, from Muhammad Bin Jamhour, from Musa, from Al Hannan, from Al Hars Bin Al Mugheira who said, ‘I said to Abu Abdullah (a.s.), ‘By what is the Master (a.s.) of this command recognised?’ He (a.s.) said: ‘By the tranquillity, and the dignity, and the knowledge, and the bequest’’.
