حدثنا جعفر بن علي عن أبيه، عن جده الحسن بن علي الكوفي، عن جده عبد الله بن المغيرة عن سالم عن أبي عبد الله (ع) قال: أوصى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله إلى علي (ع) وحده وأوصى علي إلى الحسن والحسين جميعا وكان الحسن امامه فدخل رجل يوم عرفة على الحسن (ع) وهو يتغدى الحسين (ع) صائم ثم جاء بعد ما قبض الحسن (ع) فدخل على الحسن (ع) يوم عرفة وهو يتغدى وعلي ابن الحسين صائم فقال له الرجل اني دخلت على الحسن وهو يتغدى وانت صائم ثم دخلت عليك وانت مطر! فقال: ان الحسن (ع) كان إماما لئلا يتخذ صومه سنة وليتأسى به الناس فلما ان قبض كنت الامام فاردت أن لا يتخذ صومي سنة فيتأسى الناس بى.

Ja’far Bin Ali, from his father, from his grandfather Al Hassan Bin Ali Al Kufy, from his grandfather Abdullah Bin Al Mugheira, from Salim, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah (a.s.) having said: ‘Rasool-Allah (saww) bequeathed to Ali (a.s.) alone, and Ali (a.s.) bequeathed to Al-Hassan (a.s.) and Al-Husayn (a.s.) both together. Al-Hassan (a.s.) was the Imam, so a man came over on the day of Arafaat to Al-Hassan (a.s.), and he (a.s.) was eating, and Al-Husayn (a.s.) was Fasting. Then he came after Al-Hassan (a.s.) had passed away, so he came over to Al-Husayn (a.s.) and he (a.s.) was eating and Ali (a.s.) Bin Al-Husayn (a.s.) was Fasting. So the man said to him (a.s.), ‘I went over to Al Hassan (a.s.) and he (a.s.) was eating and you (a.s.) were Fasting. Then I came over to you (a.s.), and you (a.s.) are not (Fasting)?’ So he (a.s.) said: ‘Al-Hassan (a.s.) was an Imam (at the time), perhaps his (a.s.) Fast would be taken as a Sunnah, and the people would abide by it. So when he (a.s.) passed away, I (a.s.) was an Imam, so I (a.s.) intended that my (a.s.) (fasting) not to be taken as a Sunnah, so the people would abide by it’.
